Job description

The Talent Acquisition department hires qualified candidates to fill positions which contribute to the overall strategic success of Howard University. Hiring staff "for fit" makes significant contributions to Howard University's overall mission.

BASIC FUNCTION:

The incumbent will carry out research projects involving the cellular and molecular mechanisms of ischemic and acute brain injury.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:

They will serve as an active participant in experimental procedures in the laboratory under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI).

NATURE AND SCOPE:

They will perform complex experimental procedures involving the full range of methods, procedures and techniques associated with the biomedical research. The incumbent locates and reviews the literature pertinent to projects. They develop methods for and collect, organize, and record experimental data in a form suitable for publication and future reference and maintain complete detailed records of all experiments performed in a lab notebook or other journal form. They analyze experimental results and prepare data for publication in peer reviewed journals.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

They work independently, but under the general supervision of the lab PI. Results of experiments are considered authoritative and the applicant's judgements must be acceptable without significant changes. Research guidelines are provided by the lab PI. Essential functions include:
  • Generate in vivo stroke and brain trauma data in rodents using imaging techniques
  • Analysis of gene and protein expression by molecular biological and histological techniques
  • Prepare data for publication
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication
  • Present data at scientific meetings

CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Knowledge of the principles, theories, and methods of biological science, biochemistry, molecular biology and magnetic resonace imaging
  • Knowledge of relevant scientific literature

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • PhD or MD degree in Science
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in histology and/or molecular biology.
  • Experience in working with cell cultures
