Description

SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Curriculum Specialist is responsible for providing a stimulating environment for the growth, well-being and development of the children, and the creation and implementation of lesson plans that successfully prepare children for Kindergarten readiness.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Classroom Environment: Provides a safe and stimulating environment that meets HS standards.
  1. Selects appropriate materials and equipment and arranges the room to provide an environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the developmental level and learning style of the children.
  2. Provides the group with a positive routine and with simple rules that are understood and accepted by children and adults.
  3. Help children to know, accept and appreciate themselves as individuals. Help each child develop a sense of independence and acquire the ability to express, understand and control feelings. Encourage feelings of mutual respect among the children in the group.
  4. Follows written policies and regulations established by the Center, Health Department and granting agency.
  5. Makes regular inspections and reports the need for repair or replacement of classroom supplies and equipment to their supervisor, using proper work order and supply request forms.


Curriculum: Plans lessons and creates activities that successfully prepare children for kindergarten readiness.

  1. Develops written weekly lesson plans utilizing Creative Curriculum as well as written individualized education plans.
  2. Provides daily activities and experiences which encourage questioning, probing and problem-solving skills appropriate to developmental level and learning style of the children.
  3. Provides experiences that stimulate children to explore and express their creative ability
  4. Assists children in using language as a means of communicating their thoughts, feelings and understanding of others.


Assessment and Documentation: Assesses all childrens level of development and documents progress throughout the year using the work sampling system.

  1. Observes children on a daily basis recording at least 2 observations per week per child by individualizing for each child.
  2. Formally assesses each child's development using working sampling data 3 times per year. Planning for children after assessment using data from Work Sampling Summary reports.
  3. Makes appropriate referrals based upon assessments, team planning sessions, CDT etc.
  4. Maintains all necessary record keeping, including daily meal count, attendance.


Parent Involvement: Encourages parent involvement and coaches parents on their childs continuous education.

  1. Establishes positive and productive relationships with parents and encourages them to participate in the Center's activity.
  2. Plans at a minimum 2 parent conferences per year and completes 2 home visits per year.
  3. Organizes and serves as a partner with the parents and the classroom FSC for the Class Committee.


Professional Development: Strives to improve skills and knowledge base on an ongoing basis.

  1. Participates in all professional development initiatives and assigned trainings organized by the program and the grantee office.
  2. Participates in outside workshops, seminars and training programs that will facilitate ongoing professional development.


SECONDARY DUTIES

  1. Works cooperatively with all other staff members in the implementation of Center plans, activities, policies and rules.
  2. Serves as a member of CDT when appropriate.
  3. Participates in all supplemental and enrichment activities such as parent orientation, transition night, and male involvement activities, total parent meetings and more.
  4. Attends all staff meetings and team meetings as assigned.


ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  1. Upholds the vision, mission and values of St. Vincent de Paul.
  2. Assists with and attends special events held by the Center and St. Vincent de Paul as necessary, attends meetings etc.
  3. Creates an atmosphere of care and respect for staff, volunteers and clients.
  4. Other duties as assigned, within the scope of the position


QUALIFICATIONS

  1. AA degree in Early Childhood Education, Bachelors Degree preferred.
  2. 1-2 years of classroom experience.
  3. Ability and willingness to continue training.
  4. Knowledge of and respect for confidentiality.
  5. Ability to relate in a courteous, comfortable, non-judgmental manner with persons from all ethnic, socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds.
  6. Desire and ability to work as a team player.
  7. Strong organizational and communication skills.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Environmental conditions:

  1. Type of work:
    SEDENTARY WORK: Lifting 10 pounds maximum and occasionally lifting and/or carrying small articles and occasional walking and standing.

LIGHT WORK: Lifting 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. It involves sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing/pulling of arm/or leg controls.

XMEDIUM WORK: Lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects up to 25 pounds.

HEAVY WORK: Lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects no more than 50 pounds.
