Job description
Responsible for assisting the Manager in the direction and supervision of the day-to-day operations of both technical and administrative with responsibility for technical and administrative functions for the Support Services section.
The position provides oversite to personnel and has the ability to perform appropriate discipline. The supervisor will be responsible for addressing staffing shortages, handling problem specimens, and/or following up with physicians, families and patients.
Qualifications: Minimum Education Bachelor's in Medical Technology or equivalent related field of science or business degree. (Required)
Minimum Work Experience At least 3-4 years in an accredited clinical laboratory with some knowledge of specimen processing operations preferred and experience in phlebotomy. (Required)
Required Skills/Knowledge Math Ability Level: Statistical Analysis. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills important. Knowledge and skills related to LIS desirable
Required Licenses and Certifications Medical Technologist (MT) HEW or a similar regulatory agency. Registry or eligible as MT (ASCP). (Preferred)
Functional Accountabilities Technical Knowledge
Perform all technical procedures in the section following standard operating procedures (phlebotomy optional).
Prepare schedules/assignments.
Assist in oversight of phlebotomists/lab associates.
Collaborate with the manager on significant issues or barriers.
Provide leadership and guidance to support staff and direct reports.
Manage performance planning and documentation, and facilitate goal achievement of individuals.
Support continuing education of staff in competency developments in areas of defined responsibility.
Ensure departmental compliance with the hospital's administrative and professional policies, and governmental and accreditation regulations.
Ensure a safe work environment is maintained.
Quality Assurance
Identify, evaluate and resolve technical and patient-related problems.
Collect data and facts for review by the Manager.
Document all actions taken.
Review worksheets, records and logs.
Direct overall operational functions for assigned areas.
In both formal and informal situations, create a practice environment where employees progressively internalize and demonstrate the components of customer focused care.
Staff Direction and Support
Provide in-service training and education for assigned staff.
Provide leadership and technical assistance to all assigned staff as directed by the Manager.
Assist in monitoring employee performance.
Complete timecards and print timesheets for Manager to review.
Effectively manage staff assigned.
Recommend and develop new processes and systems to meet departmental needs.
Monitoring and Compliance
Ensure send out results are current by monitoring.
Call reference labs to get delinquent results.
Verify list prices.
Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards; monitor standards including technical procedures and computer maintenance.
Document and report personnel issues.
Budget Control and Supplies
Provide cost-effective utilization of materials and personnel and assist in directing cost containment.
Coordinate repairs and maintenance of all electric equipment in the Support Services area.
Monitor supply inventories in assigned areas to ensure adequate availability.
