The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is actively seeking applications for a tenure-track faculty member in Sociology at our La Plata campus.
Sociology faculty are teaching professionals and student advisors. Our faculty are engaged and provide students with a theoretical and practical foundation in the study of Sociology emphasizing the understanding of human behavior necessary for personal, academic, and professional successCSM faculty are expected to be knowledgeable of learning management systems in addition to face-to-face and innovative technology-based instructional delivery approaches. As such, we are seeking an innovative educator to join our Sociology faculty. Sociology faculty teacha variety of courses, including Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Sociology of Families, Race and Ethnicity as well as Sex and Gender. The successful candidate will have a strong background in a range of courses

Our faculty teach a range of face-to-face, online, hybrid and/or blended and hy-flex classes using a variety of materials, including Open Educational Resources (OERs). Using both synchronous and asynchronous modes of instructional delivery, our faculty focuses on student engagement and success through critical thinking, employing analytical and hands-on approaches. We have highly skilled and creative faculty who incorporate the latest teaching approaches and technology into their instructional delivery. Our faculty works closely with students inside and outside of the classroom to help them maximize their success. In addition, sociology faculty maintain leadership roles across the college community engaging in Social Justice Day, Diversity and Inclusion events, and Faculty Innovation Team.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Sociology faculty teach a wide range of first- and second-year undergraduate classes. The successful faculty member will teach fifteen credit hours per semester and thirty credit hours per academic year of day, evening, or weekend classes. Flexibility is required to work in this position as teaching assignments may vary from semester to semester. There may be an opportunity to teach classes in the summer also. Faculty may be assigned to teach on any campus or center where CSM offers classes. The hired candidate may be asked to teach Early College, for the positions where this may apply. The faculty member hired in this position is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning and success. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, and demonstrating a commitment to professional development thorough participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities, and organizations.

DUTIES AND STANDARDS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Teach thirty credits of courses per contract year in the Sociology discipline.
  • Teach a range of courses that may include morning, day, evening, weekend or online. Classes may be taught in both 7- and 15-week terms. Opportunities may exist to teach in the summer session outside the 30-credit load.
  • This position's primary campus assignment will be in La Plata but may be required to participate in teaching or other activities on our other campuses.
  • Engage students in their learning through active and collaborative learning approaches.
  • Meet with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college students.
  • Incorporate culturally relevant pedagogies into the teaching and learning process.
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate ability to read and interpret information.
  • Demonstrate ability to deliver instruction to diverse student populations, with varied levels of learning and preparation.
  • Knowledge and use of student engagement strategies that support completion and student success goals.
  • Demonstrate experience providing feedback students can use to improve their performance.
  • Maintain an ongoing program of professional development and participate in professional organizations, workshops, seminars, conferences, and activities.
  • Mastery of appropriate computer operation skills.

Minimum Education and Training

  • M.A. in Sociology. Required
  • Ph.D. in Sociology or closely related field. Preferred.
  • At least two years of college-level teaching experience, preferably at the community college level.
  • Ability to use word processing, basic internet applications, and basic database navigation.
  • Ability to use an education enterprise, learning management system such as D2L Brightspace to support and facilitate instructional delivery.
  • Ability to teach in face-to-face, virtual, web, and web-hybrid formats.
  • Experience developing or using Open Educational Resource (OER) materials as an instructional tool.
  • Support and promote the college and discipline missions centered on excellence in teaching and learning through quality instruction, curriculum enhancement, and service.
  • Experience with program evaluation and curricular development will be given priority consideration.
