Job description

Leading Like a Lady Blog is a not-for-profit company created to provide affirming advice and a platform for women of the African diaspora feeling insecure about their status in life. We do this by producing educational documentaries, books, online media, and digital services.

Board members have a legal and ethical responsibility to ensure that the organization does the best work possible in pursuit of its mission. As a member of the Leading Like a Lady board of directors, it is expected that you believe in the purpose of the organization, and will act responsibly and prudently as its steward.

Additional responsibilities and expectations for board members include but are not limited to:

OUTREACH

Members will:

  • interpret the organization's work and values to the community, represent the organization, and be proactive as its spokesperson.
  • interpret our constituencies' needs and values to the organization, speak out for their interests, and on their behalf, hold the organization accountable.

COMMITTEES

Members will:

  • attend at least 90 percent of board meetings and prepare for these meetings by reviewing materials sent in advance via email by the Executive Director and/or Board Chair.
  • be an active member of at least one Committee or Task Force and will, if asked, be willing to take a leadership role.
  • be willing to spearhead individual fundraising initiatives and to share their professional expertise in a way that promotes efficiency and effective management of the organization.

DEVELOPMENT

Members will:

  • consider the organization as one of their top 2-3 charitable commitments;
  • help identify and cultivate relationships with donors, volunteers, and advocates;
  • actively participate in all fundraising activities.
