Youth Engagement Stewards

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

Stewards is excited to partner with Andersonville National Historic Site to host a Youth Engagement Steward (member). The Youth Engagement Steward will support the Interpretation Division. The mission of the division of Interpretation is to engage the public in a manner that encourages stewardship of our nation's natural and cultural resources. This is done through public talks and tours, special events, Junior Ranger activities, and curriculum-based education programs.

The member will engage the public by developing and presenting interpretive and educational programs, both on-site and virtual, as well as all of the park's special events such as Wreaths Across America, Memorial Day decoration of the cemetery, and the park's living history events. The member will also assist in coordinating youth outreach programs throughout the year, including the park's summer youth program, Junior Ranger Days. In addition, the intern will help develop a site bulletin focused on the African American history of Andersonville.

The member will have the opportunity to work with facilities and natural resources departments to maintain and improve the cultural landscape of Andersonville National Cemetery. The member will be exposed to multiple work divisions and fields of study, learning about many of the career tracks within the National Park Service and the federal government in general, and will work with an enthusiastic team who are always eager to share their knowledge and experience. There will be no shortage of mentors on site.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Prepare and execute a summer Junior Ranger Program
    • Work with supervisor and team to develop summer youth program
    • Organize take home bags for youth program participants
    • Design special junior ranger patch for summer program
  • Research and develop a site bulletin on the history of African Americans at Andersonville National Historic Site
    • Read park s Special Research Study, Hidden in Plain View for resource
    • Find pictures
    • Write text under supervision of lead ranger
  • Community Outreach
    • Find and attend community events with other team members
    • With support of visual information specialist design flyers to invite community to on-site special events

Minimum Requirements:

  • Two years of relevant academic study or one-year of relevant experience
  • Applicants must pass a criminal history background check and should possess a valid driver s license with a clean driving record.
  • Must have a valid driver s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).

Preferred Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in the fields of communications, history, or education at an HBCU

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of C# programming language, with the ability to assist in debugging and what-if/impact analysis
  • Working knowledge of SQL programming language, with the ability to create custom SQL queries by understanding data flow and database design
  • Ability to develop guidelines to build project specific reports and coding conventions to write custom SQL views
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience gathering functional requirements and translating them to technical specifications or designs
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing, refining, and documenting complex system user requirements including functional objectives of system, data sources and availability, report requirements and cross-system integration requirements
  • Relevant experience analyzing data and verifying data integrity
  • Proven ability to analyze project workflow, identify gaps and disconnects, and recommend solutions for improvement
  • Must be detail oriented and able to multi-task across concurrent initiatives.
  • Ability to work both individually and in a collaborative team environment
  • Experience working with major operating systems (Windows and Mac) and the MS Office Suite
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with Azure DevOps Server
  • Experience with resource management information systems
  • Experience creating storyboards
  • Knowledge of data modeling and data visualization tools (e.g. erwin Data Modeler)
  • Cloud architecture experience and/or experience operating working in a cloud environment
  • Experience in budgeting or cost-analysis
  • Experience with and understanding of Army force structure data
