Temporary Position

$34.15 per hour

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Professional proficiency level of English and a language of need for Charles County Public Schools (CCPS).
QUALIFICATIONS
  • No experience required.
  • Must be fluent in English and have strong verbal/written communication skills in second language of need to CCPS.
  • Proficiency can be established with any of the following evidence:
    • Advanced Mid (7) score on the STAMP 4S or STAMP WS proficiency assessment by AVANT OR equivalent proficiency assessment on alternate assessment as needed when language is unavailable on STAMP. This proficiency assessment is administered as part of the CCPS Interpreter Preparation Program.
    • Candidate may provide official score report from an MSDE approved language proficiency assessment that was administered within two years. List is available upon request.
  • Must have successful completion of the CCPS Interpreter Preparation Program (provided during the hiring process).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Under general supervision, interpret spoken language between two or more individuals from English to the target language and vice versa to ensure accurate cross-language communication in an educational environment.
  • Interprets the spoken language from English into the target language and from the target language into English for families, students, school, and administrative staff.
  • Interprets in parent-teacher conferences, IEP Meetings, 504s, SSTs, and school and family events to assist in conveying the message to non-English speaking families and school or administrative staff.
  • Facilitates appropriate verbal communication through the following activities:
    • Interpreting information accurately conveying the thought, intent, and spirit of the speaker.
    • Directing all parties' questions or comments to each other and remains neutral in all interactions.
    • Using appropriate educational interpreting techniques to maintain clarity within the conversation.
    • Identifying potential intercultural miscommunications and encourages all parties to ask questions that allow the speakers to elaborate on previously implied information.
    • Maintaining indefinite and absolute confidentiality, unless otherwise required by law.
    • Interpreting all utterances made during the meeting.
  • Maintains professional boundaries while interpreting.
  • Identifies circumstances that would prevent the interpreter from performing his/her duties to the standards of CPPS and requests that the meeting facilitator address them before the meeting begins.
  • Follows all CCPS guidelines regarding scheduling interpreter jobs, procedures for documentation of interpreting work, and completion of timesheets.
  • Submits appropriate documentation within the required timeframe.
  • Attends mandatory, annual interpreter training to maintain employment as an interpreter. Training will be offered multiple times each summer and interpreters are required to attend one session.
  • Complies with all CCPS and school policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Maintain and continue professional growth and development.
  • Refrains from assisting staff or families in topics outside of his/her scope as interpreter.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
