CSO for Speech-Language Pathology

Job description

A. General Description:

The purpose of this position is to provide visionary and strategic leadership for the organization related to the profession of speech-language pathology that will assure that the association creates and delivers value to members and affiliates. The incumbent will serve as the National Office "point person" for issues related to speech-language pathology. As a member of the Facilitating Team, the CSO for Speech-Language Pathology shares responsibility with the other Chief Staff Officers for working with the Chief Executive Officer to help ensure smooth, effective, and efficient operations of the National Office and for working effectively with ASHA's volunteer leaders to anticipate and meet the needs of ASHA members.

B. Responsibilities:

  1. Identify and analyze the complex political environment as well as trends and issues within and surrounding the discipline of human communication sciences and disorders and the Association, especially related to the profession of speech-language pathology, education, health care, and advocacy, and collaborate with association leaders to identify and implement appropriate solutions for achieving desired outcomes.
  2. Provide strategic direction and professional, technical, and management leadership as a member of the Facilitating Team in determining office-wide policies and procedures to enhance the ASHA National Office work efforts in a manner consistent with a member-centric culture.
  3. Facilitate decisions related to strategic direction and identification of priorities, and provide professional, technical, and management leadership to: the National Office Speech-Language Pathology unit and volunteer leaders (including committees, boards, and councils); and serve as a management liaison to other programmatic areas (e.g., Governmental Affairs and Public Policy, Special Interest Groups and International Affairs).
  4. Assure effective development, implementation, and monitoring of budgets for assigned management units e.g., speech-language pathology, government affairs and public policy, special interest groups and international affairs.
  5. Provide leadership and consultation on the development of programs to demonstrate the value of ASHA members' services and activities to decision makers at the federal, state, and local levels and in the reimbursement arena.
  6. Serve as liaison and/or ASHA representative to various external organizations to represent the interests of ASHA members and individuals with communication and related disorders.
  7. Coach, mentor, and facilitate staff efforts to assist them in effectively contributing to and accomplishing ASHA's objectives.


C. Contacts:

To accomplish responsibilities listed above, the incumbent has contact with:

  1. Staff members to coordinate, train, monitor, coach, and facilitate their work.
  2. The Chief Executive Officer, the Board of Directors, other Facilitating Team members, and volunteer leaders to advise about issues related to speech-language pathology and other functions.
  3. Outside federal agencies and other national and international organizations related to speech-language pathology.


D. Freedom to Act:

The incumbent is given wide latitude in directing the activities of the staff units which they monitor. The incumbent's work is reviewed by the Chief Executive Officer to see that the desired results are achieved while modeling the desired organizational characteristics.

E. Qualifications - Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

Knowledge and skills typically acquired through:

  • Graduate degree in speech-language pathology; doctorate degree in speech-language pathology preferred.
  • Approximately 10 years of experience in the profession of speech-language pathology with managerial experience
  • Management of budgets of $500,000 or more
  • Motivating, developing, and directing staff of greater than 10 to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Management experience in a complex or member-driven organization or association preferred


Scope and depth of technical skills/knowledge:

  • Deep understanding of and commitment to serving the needs of speech-language pathologists
  • Understanding of the research and practice of the profession of speech-language pathology
  • Demonstrated superior change management capabilities with effective relationship building skills


Scope and depth of nontechnical skills/knowledge:

  • Experience in a volunteer driven organization.
  • Facilitative approach to management and strong facilitative leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to creating and maintaining a high performing team.
  • Focus on effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work
  • Demonstrated ability to work both in a team environment and independently, and to problem-solve proactively
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to work cooperatively on a team
