What You Will Do

As an Equipment Operator, you will use your heavy equipment experience to help maintain Carroll County's roads. Your expertise with graders, backhoes, and boom mowers will impact the Bureau of Roads through debris removal, equipment operation, and equipment maintenance. The Bureau of Roads Operations will rely on you to help keep roads safe and functional.

Essential Duties

  • Operate equipment including grader, backhoe, power box, and boom mower. Drive vehicles requiring a Class B CDL.
  • Complete storm drainage system pipe replacement, surface repair, and asphalt patching.
  • Maintain roads by removing debris and foliage to clear water drainage. Perform general labor and traffic control duties as needed.
  • Perform basic maintenance on equipment, tools and vehicles. Complete vehicle inspection reports required by Department of Transportation.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment.
  • Perform snow removal as needed.
  • Ensure all work is complete and timely to support department goals. Evaluate feedback and procedures to improve efficiency.
  • Invite collaboration and seek learning opportunities. Proactively assist peers to create a supportive work environment.
  • Exhibit integrity, ethics, and fiscal responsibility.

You Might Be a Good Fit If

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
  • One or more years of related experience
  • A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirement.

Licenses

  • Class B commercial driver's license (CDL)
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) physical card
  • State of Maryland Flagging Certification (or must obtain within six months of employment)

Additional Information

  • Will be required to work outside of standard hours.

Working Conditions

  • Daily exposure to potentially adverse weather conditions.
  • Work includes daily physical activity: lifting and carrying over 75lbs, climbing ladders, and related activities.
  • Must wear appropriate PPE as required.
