Position Overview:
The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) is seeking a Chief Economist . The Chief Economist serves as a key advisor, economic expert and research lead for the NAM and its members. The Chief Economist has an important external role in showing the trends in manufacturing and dissecting economic indicators. In addition, the Chief Economist leads the development and delivery of the research agenda of the Manufacturing Institute (MI), the NAM s workforce development and education affiliate.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
This person will also be responsible for leading and working closely with key internal stakeholders, including government relations (to ensure consistency and effectiveness in NAM representation before policymakers), membership (to identify issues and communicate updates on priority items), and public affairs and marketing (to inform NAM advocacy campaigns, demonstrate value to our membership on assigned issues and identify opportunities to enhance NAM s public-facing work).
The successful candidate has a track record of success in economic analysis, research and management within an advocacy organization. Candidate should be able to analyze and communicate complex issues clearly and succinctly to a variety of audiences. Experience with public speaking, including engagement with the media, is preferred.
Key responsibilities include working proactively and collaboratively with policy experts and internal groups to develop data to inform policymakers. In this role, the Chief Economist will work closely with key leaders at the NAM's 14,000 member companies to identify emerging trends, track key metrics and spot research opportunities, while communicating with internal and external stakeholders about data relevant to the manufacturing industry and ensuring that the NAM is responsive to the needs of manufacturers. To accomplish this mission, the Chief Economist will be expected to regularly travel to meetings with manufacturers.
The Chief Economist will also dedicate approximately 25% of their time to leading and managing the MI s research portfolio. This will require active coordination with the MI s Chief Program Officer on the purpose and strategy of the MI s research agenda. It will also necessitate a close working relationship with the MI s Senior Manager of Workforce Insights to manage and produce the MI s in-house research and coordinate with outside partners. Travel may be required for the MI, but it will be limited.
