Job description

Position: Medical Records Data Abstractor

Location: Silver Spring, MD

Work Environment:On Site

Status: Funded through August, eligible for continuance

Knowesis is seeking a junior candidate to provide Data Abstraction Support for the Veterans Health Administration Vision Center of Excellence (VHA VCE). Data abstraction support includes review, identification, and relevancy of medical and related clinical data from medical records and other medical documentation for ocular injuries and illnesses. This includes data collected on eye care diagnosis, surgical intervention, operative procedures, visual acuity, and treatment for Veterans.

To be eligible for this position, candidates must possess U.S. Citizenship without the need for sponsorship, both now and in the future. Applicants without proof of U.S. Citizenship will not be considered due to the position's security requirements.

The Job Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Reviewing, analyzing, and transcribing comprehensive, accurate data relating to patients with ocular injury, ophthalmological and optometric, blind rehabilitation exam notes from various DoD/VA health applications
  • Reviewing and collecting data from electronic health records or other DoD/VA health applications to assist in research studies, protocols, and additional projects within the VCE
  • Maintaining abreast of current and new business rules


Required Qualifications:

  • Previous clinical experience as an ophthalmology or optometry technician or vision related medical data abstractor experience.
  • Must be familiar with the anatomy of the eye.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Must report on site in Silver Spring at least 4 days a week


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with reviewing Optometry/ Ophthalmology/ Blind rehab exam notes and abstracting key data and information
  • Familiarity with Capri/Vista and/or abstracting key data and information to the Defense & Veterans Eye Injury Vision Registry (DVEIVR) Experience with the DoD or VA VCE
  • Experience managing/ reviewing DoD/VA medical data
  • Experience working with Veterans Health


Required Education:

  • Highschool diploma or higher / preferred Bachelors Degree
