The Accountant contributes to the Office of Academic Affairs by ensuring timely, accurate, and complete financial information for reporting, decision-making, and stewardship accountability for all OAA units and fund types. As a member of the fiscal services team, the individual in this position performs daily front-end accounting activities, including but not limited to, entering journals, validating information, and problem-solving in a continuously evolving environment. This position ensures appropriate recording of all financial transactions. Performs account reconciliations, investigates any discrepancies or missing items, escalates issues, and ensures timely corrections. Works closely with Ohio State Accounts Payable, Financial Services, Bursar's Office, and other stakeholders. Uses multiple enterprise, third party, and local systems, such as Workday, Tableau and the Microsoft Office Suite to pull and reconcile a high volume of data in a dynamic environment. Works closely with the fiscal and HR teams to ensure correct accounting for expenses processed via payroll. Supports managerial and cost accounting by preparing a wide variety of standard and ad hoc reports. Works closely with the fiscal services colleagues for successful completion of fiscal period closes. Supports audits, internal controls, and continuous quality improvement in financial stewardship. Supports ad-hoc special projects as assigned. This role reports to the Accounting Supervisor and will often interact with university business managers and other local stakeholders such as business and finance. The ideal candidate is expected to have a solid foundation in accounting, possess excellent problem-solving skills, ability to understand and work with the complexities of fund accounting, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to function proficiently with varying day-to-day volume.

Duties and Responsibilities

40% Ensures proper recording of fiscal activity; regularly reconciles general ledger accounts and resolves issues in a timely manner. Initiates journal entries and prepares reports on ad hoc basis for internal and external stakeholders. Supports with unit-specific financial inquiries and requests.

40% Supports successful month-end and fiscal-year-end closing: responsible for running reporting and preparing financial statements, monitoring expenses, and reviewing accounting reports to ensure transactions are recorded appropriately, invoices are issued and settled timely in accordance with established standards and agreements, and accounts are appropriately reconciled; identifies areas of opportunities and weaknesses, and recommends solutions to achieve optimal efficiency.

10% Uses accounting knowledge to understand fiscal processes and controls to ensure appropriate compliance and integrity of financials. Makes recommendations for process and policy improvements. Contributes to developing innovative solutions that assist our stakeholders with the financial tools that helps them with meeting the financial and business goals of their unit.

10% Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor degree in accounting or related degree with specialization in accounting: two years of experience; experience with accounting software such as Workday, strong math skills; attention to detail, ability to handle multiple projects while maintaining accuracy; proficient with MS Office products, especially intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills; excellent analytical skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations; ability to work well in a collaborative and dynamic environment.

Desired: Experience with university or not-for-profit fund accounting; knowledge and understanding of Ohio State University business principles, policies and procedures.
