Job description

The Rappahannock Regional Jail is seeking an LPN to perform intermediate skilled human support work assisting in the care and treatment of inmates detained in the regional Jail, preparing and dispensing injections, immunizations, and medications, collecting medical data, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides nursing care to inmates in the facility infirmary and crisis cells; obtains health history; assesses physical and psychological dimensions of patients.

  • Assists the physician or physician's assistant with sick call clinic; reviews and assesses inmates; prepares medical histories.

  • Conducts infirmary hours during day shift for inmates needing immediate medical care.

  • Enters data and maintains patient confidential medical records utilizing online medical record system.

  • Administers medication to jail inmates; discusses inmate's condition with physician; orders medication; sets-up, dispenses and charts medication.

  • Confers with health care agencies, dentists, and other agencies involved in prescribing medications for inmates.

  • Performs standard clinical evaluation tests such as blood pressures, temperatures, drawing blood for laboratory testing; assesses conditions; dispenses prescriptions.

  • Conducts inventory of medical supplies; orders from vendors as needed or required.

  • Assists in training and mentoring new employees as they rotate through the infirmary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates/Technical degree and moderate experience in professional practical nursing, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Possession of Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Professionals certification upon hire.

  • Possession of American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification upon hire.

  • Must meet and maintain minimum qualifications for the position established by the Authority and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Applicant must pass a criminal background, Drug Test, DMV check and polygraph examination.
