Scope of Position: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center?s mission is to improve health in Ohio and across the world through innovation in research, education, and patient care. The team provides patient care and supportive services directed towards achievement of positive patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient?s involvement in his/her own plan of care and reducing the length of hospitalization, The clinic nurse plays a critical role in staff engagement , the patient experience, quality and safety, and cost effective care.

Position Summary: The Clinic Nurse is responsible for managing and providing care to the patient and his/her family, and for directing and supervising nursing care provided by other members of the patient care team. The Clinic Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, delegating and evaluating the nursing care of patients in alignment with the professional practice model.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor's Level Degree

Required Qualifications
Degree in Nursing from a CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) or Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredited nursing program required. Current Ohio license or interim permit. *Experience in relevant care setting preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

85% Direct Patient Care

  • Working within scope of license, provide direct nursing care to patients by assessing their physical, psychological, and emotional status. Develop and implement nursing plan of care for patients. Communicate the plan of care to patients as prescribed by physician: test results, scheduling of specialized tests and treatment modalities, prescription drug instructions and other patient education including procedures and/or disease processes.
  • Measure and record patients' vital signs/conditions, such as but not limited to height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration. When in a preoperative unit, collects vital signs at the patient visit including heart rate, respirations, oxygen saturation, blood pressure and temperature. Completes medication reconciliation process.
  • Using the nursing process, triage patient concerns in clinic as well as over the telephone and provide nursing advice. Receive phone calls relating to appointments, urgent care, inpatient admissions, prescription refills and test results in accordance with clinic protocols and coordinate proper disposition of each. Follow guidelines for managing, addressing, and responding to IHIS in-basket tasks and communications received via other electronic means.
  • Obtain, review, verify and/or complete health care forms related to home health care, referrals, medical equipment and other patient/physician needs as appropriate. Responsible for managed care authorization process and completes insurance and medical forms for patients or assist patients in completing the forms.
  • Performs complex burn dressing changes, administers medications safely and assesses patient responses. Documents all medications administered, diagnostic procedures and treatments performed; patient/family education provided; and patient responses observed.
  • Observe patients and reporting changes in patients' conditions, such as adverse reactions to medication or treatment, and taking any necessary action.
  • Coordinates patient care diagnostic testing, which has been ordered by physicians. This may include communications with the OSU Medical Center. Must be able to prepare and process laboratory samples using established protocols.
  • Recognizes patient rights and provides for confidentiality of patient information and for dignity through own performance and in relationship with others.
  • Participate in special projects as needed including but not limited to development of nursing documentation forms, development or procurement of patient education forms, quality assurance activities, etc.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods. Identifies and/or communicates any safety issues for the clinical equipment, building, follows-up to ensure completion.
  • Role may include assisting the provider with real-time documentation of each patients medical chart during his or her appointment.
  • Ability to perform functions using job-related software and systems.

10% Clinic Operations

  • Help maintain patient flow and workflow. Work collaboratively as a team member of the clinic staff to provide a high quality and efficient service to patients and clinic.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines; promotes and supports research activities; and utilizes available resources to provide and improve patient care.
  • Participates in staff meetings and quality improvement team efforts, including meetings to discuss quality assurance improvement initiatives.
  • Where assigned, responsible for ordering clinic supplies, making equipment recommendations, and assisting in ensuring appropriate billing of clinic services and supplies.
  • Maintains patient areas and working spaces in a clean, neat and orderly manner. Monitors use of supplies/medications; restocks as necessary and informs appropriate persons of needs for additional supplies.
  • Attendance, promptness, professionalism, the ability to pay attention to detail, cooperativeness with co-workers and supervisors, and politeness to customers, vendors, and patients.

5% of time:

Assumes functions of other patient care team members, when qualified, and other duties as necessary.
