I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs (ESIA) is one of the world s leading schools of international affairs and one of the largest schools of international affairs in the United States. In support of this mission, the Elliott School s Office of Undergraduate Academic Advising seeks an outstanding individual to be an Academic Advisor, ESIA Undergraduate Advising. The Undergraduate Academic Advising team proudly provides advising services for approximately 2,000 diverse, talented, and purpose-driven undergraduate students. Through individual and group sessions, workshops, and programs, the team empowers students to develop goals, navigate academic programs, use available resources, and explore the field of international affairs.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Advise undergraduates from orientation through graduation.
  • Monitor students progress, review program requirements and opportunities with them through individual meetings and on-going email/virtual communication.
  • Connect with students on probation and students with incomplete or missing grades.
  • Audit degree progress, conduct senior reviews, and degree clearances.
  • Serve as liaison to one or more academic departments or student service units.
  • Participate in a committee, project, or working group about new student orientation, the student experience, curriculum, graduation, or advising operations.
  • Represent the Elliott School Office of Undergraduate Academic Advising at various school and University level meetings and events.


Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

The undergraduate academic advising team is composed of general academic advisors, senior academic advisors, two assistant directors, a director, and an administrative coordinator who work in a highly collaborative and supportive work environment. Core to the engagement of staff, the Office supports opportunities, both on campus and beyond, for professional development. This is a hybrid position with some days on-campus and some days remote.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic advising experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with international affairs curricula and professional opportunities.
  • Knowledge of, and willingness to learn, student information systems and other technology used to track degree progress (e.g., Banner, DegreeWorks, Salesforce, Documentum).

Typical Hiring Range

$41,016.94 - $56,379.08
