Job description

The Position:

The Senior Controller at Headfirst Companies oversees all aspects of the day-to-day accounting and financial control functions across Headfirst's corporate office and four programmatic divisions: Headfirst Honor Roll, Headfirst Professional Sports Camps, Headfirst Summer Camps, and KI Concerts.

The Senior Controller's core duties include leading Headfirst's internal Finance Team and external Finance service providers in the performance of ongoing financial and accounting activities, managing the annual budgeting and planning process, and acting as a strategic thought-partner for organizational leadership to maximize and strengthen Headfirst's organizational capacity.

Our Senior Controller will be the senior-most internal Finance team member, with direct management responsibilities over members of Headfirst's Finance team. The Senior Controller will also have a voice in steering Headfirst's strategic direction through their spot on Headfirst's Leadership Team, as well as through their consistent ongoing collaboration with senior stakeholders across the organization.

The Senior Controller role is a full-time corporate position based primarily in-person (at least 3 days per week) from Headfirst's Washington, DC headquarters offices, with flexibility for in-person or remote work the remainder of the week.

What You'll Do:

  • Oversee all financial and project/program accounting, leading a team of direct reports, and external accounting resources where applicable, in the performance of daily financial activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll (both corporate and seasonal), and journal entries.
  • Serve as a key member of the organization's Leadership Team, collaborating cross-functionally with Leadership Team colleagues to drive business performance and ensure teamwide alignment on mission-critical priorities.
  • Partner with senior stakeholders across the organization in strategic decision making, planning, and operations, providing clear, accurate, and timely financial reports, performance metrics, and analysis.
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Manage the financial statement formulation process and clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Analyze and present financial reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Serve as the final internal authority on quality and accuracy of all financial data, reporting, and audit coordination.
  • Track tax, compliance, and insurance audit reporting due dates and ensure timely delivery of accurate information and reporting.
  • Work closely with key external partners (including but not limited to Headfirst's fractional CFO, tax CPA, insurance brokers, tax authorities, and auditors), maintaining clear and professional communication on high level accounting, compliance, and reporting tasks.
  • Maintain open lines of communication and regular meeting rhythms with business unit stakeholders to keep spending on track.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-divisional and cross-departmental (non-financial) colleagues to prepare, monitor/adapt, and review all financial plans and budgets; translate financial concepts, lead trainings, and provide financial tools as needed to facilitate team-wide understanding and ensure proper budget execution.
  • Implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices, regularly assessing current processes and procedures for opportunities to streamline or improve financial operations.
  • Take on other responsibilities as identified or requested by Headfirst Companies' senior leadership.
About You:
  • Bachelor's degree, with CPA/MBA or related degree strongly preferred.
  • At least 10 years of post-college professional experience, with 7+ years of broad financial experience with increasing levels of responsibility and complexity of financial transactions.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing direct reports.
  • Experience with multi-divisional and multi-company accounting.
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, QuickBooks Online, Bill.com.
  • Ability to pass required background and credit checks.
