Job description

The Controller is responsible for the preparation and accuracy of internal and external financial organizational reporting, supervision of the accounting team, forecasting, budgeting, and developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure compliance with GAAP. This position supervises three staff in the accountingarea,and two staff members in the finance area. This position is responsible for managing the team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner. This position addresses tight deadlines anda multitude ofcost accounting and finance activitiesincludinggeneral ledger preparation, financial reporting, ALM reporting and analysis, year-end audit preparation, and the support of budget and forecast activities.The manager will have contact with senior-level executives and the Directorwhichrequires stronginterpersonal communication skillsbothwritten and verbal.This position reports to the CFO, Finance and Accounting.

MajorDuties and Responsibilities:

  • Compiles, analyzes, and delivers a variety of financial, regulatory, and management reportsincludingthe monthly Board packet and other assigned reports.
  • Compiles and provides senior management with monthly financial reports and variance analyses. Works with stakeholders to build new reports and ensure accurate and ongoing delivery.
  • Manage reporting inputs and outputs with particular attention to the underlying datathatisusedand ensure that the components are valid and accurate.
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the accounting team:

    • Plans and directs the development and implementation of the accounting system to improve efficiencies.
    • Responsible for the management, direction, and operation of the general accounting and finance activitiesof the credit unionsuchas the general ledger, accounts payable, fixed assets, etc.includingupdating department policies and procedures.
    • Administers the settlement of securities transactions and their cashflows,and manages the accounting and reporting functions for the investment portfolio.
    • Ensure that the allowance for loan losses, loan level detail reconciliation, and overall interest income verification areallaccurate and appropriate.
    • Manages various department and company projects.
    • Administer the accurate data flow from the accounting departmente.g.loan data to consultants, operational data to professional service partners, financial data to networking partners, etc.
  • This role is responsible fortheemployment, counseling, performance evaluation, training, motivation, and disciplineof employees.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication and coordination with personnel andwithmanagement and sets and manages the goals of the accounting team.
  • Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limitedto,the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
  • Mustbe in full compliancewith applicableFASB,and NCUA pronouncements and regulations.
  • Responsible for quarterly NCUA call reports and other quarterly outputs to vendors and outside professionals.
  • Responsible for the annual financial statement auditincludingthe coordination with auditors, preparation of draft statements and disclosures, preparation, and review/preparation of auditor requests.
  • Serves as the primary contact for the financial statement audit.


Knowledge and Skills:
  • Certified CPA preferred.
  • A degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting is required. Public accounting experience a plus.
  • Five years to ten years of similar or related experienceAccountingexperience with3or more years of experience managing and coaching small to moderately-sized teams, as well as direct supervisory experience.
  • A significant level of trust, credibility, and diplomacy is required.In-depth dialogue, conversations, and explanations with customers, direct and indirect reportsandoutside vendors can beof asensitiveand/orhighly confidentialnature.
  • Communications may involve motivating, influencing, educating,and/oradvising others on matters of significance.
  • Typically includes subject matter experts as well as first-level to middle managers.
  • Excellent analytical skills, people skills, and self-directionProficiencywith PC accounting, spreadsheet, and word processing softwareBackgroundin financial data processing systems preferredStronganalytical and communication skills required.
  • Must be able to work in groups. Strong prioritization and time management skillsStrongpresentation skills that allow for tailoring items to specific groups.


Physical Requirements

Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional liftingofup to 25 lbs. Must be capable of climbing/descending stairs in emergencies. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on a computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of local and area travel as a driver. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Working Conditions

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in a climate-controlled private office with minimal noise.
