Bishop McNamara High School is a private, Catholic co-educational high school in the Holy Cross tradition, offering its students a challenging college preparatory curriculum and a complete range of athletics and activities. The school is located in Forestville, Maryland, about 10 minutes from Washington, D.C.

Bishop McNamara High School has an opening to join the Science department. You will teach courses in Biology and possibly other electives offered by the Science Department. This is a full-time position for the 2024-2025 school year, supported by a collaborative team of experienced teachers and mentors.

We develop young people whose scientific knowledge, understanding, and skills empower them to solve the world's most pressing problems. We aim for our students to understand the role science plays in their lives, and accept their responsibility to act in ways that preserve and improve our global environment. Our courses teach students to design and conduct experiments that investigate scientific questions, analyze data both graphically and statistically, and communicate persuasively. Students who successfully complete our course requirements will have met the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with an emphasis on the physical and life sciences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop lesson plans in the relevant subject area and grade, and ensure all lessons align with curriculum objectives.
  • Draw up classroom procedures and safety regulations and ensure all students understand them.
  • Use a range of teaching materials and methods to advance student learning.
  • Provide additional support and interventions for students as needed, based on their readiness and learning profile.
  • Prepare students for tests, exams, presentations, experiments, and other assessments.
  • Grade assessments and providing feedback and reports to students and parents.
  • Attend staff and parent meetings to provide helpful recommendations or voice concerns.
  • Establish rapport and professional relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Supervise students in class, during events, and on field trips.
  • Monitor students' overall wellbeing and liaising with school counselors and other staff members when there are concerns or issues.
  • Attend ongoing learning initiatives like workshops, lectures, conferences, and other events where you are able to expand education networks.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in science, mathematics, engineering, education, or related fields
  • Commitment to development of the whole student, including well-being and character, in alignment with the Holy Cross tradition of education

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching in a high school, with demonstrated expertise in differentiated instruction
  • Experience using technology to extend and enhance learning in a 1:1 BYOD environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

LOCATION/TRAVEL: While Bishop McNamara High School is located in Forestville, MD, you may live anywhere in the surrounding region, but be willing to make any commute to the school.
