Job Summary

The Power Delivery Substation Business Unit (BU) is currently accepting internal applications for a Department Manager (DM) for the Substation Department in our Fort Mill office (located in Fort Mill, South Carolina), reporting to the Southeast Regional Manager (RM). This is a mostly in-office position although some hybrid flexibility is available. Please note this internal-only posting expires at the end of Friday June 7, 2024.
Roles and Responsibilities

The DM is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the department to produce a product consistent with POWER's mission statement and our culture. The DM is expected to achieve the goals of the department business plan, maintain POWER's high-quality standards, promote internal teamwork (intra- and inter-department), and support the needs of our clients. This position is also responsible for assisting with developing, maintaining and strengthening client relationships associated with projects in the department while supporting corporate initiatives in line with department business plan goals. This individual will manage a team of administrative staff, drafters, designers and engineers in addition to acting as the responsible project engineer for selected, limited projects. The DM is responsible for working closely with the RM and other DMs in the region to accomplish regional strategy goals and to balance direct-award "alliance" client backlog while pursuing competitive-bid local work, with the long-term goal of gaining more work from local clients.
  • Perform and direct others in the detailed design of medium to extra high voltage utility substations including, but not limited to:

- One-line diagrams

- Schematics

- Wiring diagrams

- SCADA

- Communications

- Conduit and cable sizing/routing

- Substation physical above grade and below grade design

- Development of substation equipment specifications

- Selection of substation equipment

- Proposal development

- Construction cost estimates

- Project scheduling

- Project budgeting

- Facility studies
  • Act as trusted advisor to the RM to support the Southeast Region, communicating regularly via:

- Weekly touchpoints

- Bi-weekly region teleconferences

- Monthly reporting

- Bi-annual region meetings (travel may be required)

- Quarterly business plan audits

- Bi-annual Department Manager meetings (travel may be required)
  • Manage all financial, technical, and staffing aspects of performance for this Substation Department, including, but not limited to:

- Timecard approvals

- Monthly financial reporting

- Weekly and monthly resource planning

- Annual business plans

- Bi-annual appraisals

- Salary/promotion/bonus recommendations

- Shareholder writeups

- Department participation in the Knowledge Management Program (KMP)

- Proposals

- Project design book audits

- Monthly lunch & learns

- Mentorship

- QA/QC
Required Experience
  • Eight (8) or more years of experience in substation design
  • Demonstratable experience as a leader of substation project/client teams
  • Demonstrated competence in client team development and growing/maintaining client relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Experience
  • Twelve (12) or more years of experience in substation design
  • Professional Engineering license (PE) and/or proven related substation design experience
  • Demonstrated competence in working with other POWER Substation Departments
Term of Assignment

This is a full-time, long-term assignment needing a commitment of approximately 5 years.
