Job description

Opportunity Time Frame:

  • For shelter-based services, interns work flexible schedule and schedule will be determined by the clinicians placed at the site.
  • The Shelter is 24 hours but will consist of mornings, afternoons, and possible some evenings. Hours per week depends on the school requirements for field placement.
  • Internship time frame predominately runs from September through April but can include summertime internship/extended internship.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Current Student of an accredited Masters of Social Work or Masters of Counseling program, or Bachelor of Social Work program
  • Masters or doctoral level student
  • Student must be enrolled at an academic Institution that has an existing contract with Sheppard Pratt. Please click this link to see the list of participating universities.
  • Students applying to this internship/practicum will need a strong foundation in child/adolescent mental health theory and related theory and practice, clinical reasoning, foundations of evidence-based practice, group theory and application, and teaching/learning concepts and applications related to staff, client, and caregiver education.


Learning Model:

Supervision is provided in a 1:1 supervision model by a Licensed Certified Social Worker, Clinical or Licensed Certified Professional Counselor once a week. In addition, task supervision will be provided at offsite placements by a licensed masters level social worker or counselor who is on-site daily. Both group supervision as well as training opportunities are also provided on a bi-monthly basis.

Student expectations include self-directed learning; independently seeking learning opportunities and feedback, flexible thinking and adaptability. Readiness to learn from all experiences. Patience and compassion when working with this challenging patient population.
