Position Overview
Be a part of a non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting democracy, human rights, and international cooperation. As the Controller, you'll lead all accounting operations, from financial reporting to maintaining precise records and establishing crucial systems. This role ensures compliance with regulations, donor mandates, and upholding Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.




Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the accounting staff
  • Directly supervise, mentor, and provide leadership to the accounting team
  • Implement, document, and maintain effective internal controls
  • Ensure compliance with regulations, financial standards, and donor requirements
  • Understand financial processes and implement improvements for efficiency
  • Implement and maintain accounting software, ensuring staff training
  • Coordinate and oversee monthly and fiscal year-end closing activities
  • Monitor and manage external grants, agreements, and funding mechanisms for compliance
  • Prepare internal financial statements, variance analysis, and reports for board meetings
  • Coordinate with auditors for grant and annual audits
  • Prepare IRS Form 990 with external tax accountant
  • Manage cash balances, cash flows, and assist with forecasting
  • Maintain current accounting policies and procedures manual
  • Supervise investment accounting and liaise with external investment advisor
  • Monitor grant revenue recognition and balances
  • Manage payroll function for accuracy and compliance
  • Monitor monthly financial reporting from European offices
  • Provide guidance on accounting policies and procedures to other offices
  • Research and resolve complex accounting issues
  • Assist VP/CFO in reviewing financial reports and budgeting processes

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, required. CPA or advanced degree preferred
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • 3 years of supervisory experience required
  • Knowledge of GAAP is essential
  • Experience in non-profit accounting and grant management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and financial software
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a team
  • Proactive attitude towards process improvement and project management

Compensation

  • Salary: $131,301 - $164,127
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 4 Weeks of Vacation
