Description

Do you love baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, and/or speed and agility and want to help youth enjoy these activities too? Want to positively influence young people (ages 4 to 18) as they learn the rules, develop their skills, practice good sportsmanship, and have fun? Then why not join our Sports Team to work with youth in the ?

We are looking for positive, responsible, and dependable individuals who can make sure the rules and spirit of these activities are followed, encourage fair play with a focus on fun, and put the safety of all players and spectators first. You must be able to deal with participants, coaches, parents, and spectators in a positive, reassuring, courteous, and professional manner and are expected to provide a high level of customer service to recreation program participants. The City's Sports Team is an innovative and collaborative group committed to encouraging exercise through participation, establishing life-long fundamentals of fairness, and promoting recreational opportunities and interests that contribute to the health and well-being of the Gaithersburg community.

Spring sports programs will start in March and run through May. Staff must attend some preliminary meetings to review department policies and program expectations.

Starting hourly rate is negotiable within the range and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees. Hours per week will vary based on operational needs, but will generally not exceed an average of 6 to 12 hours per week. Please indicate in the supplemental questions your preferred sport(s).

Job Functions

What you will do with us:
  • Officiate games for participating youth; enforce rules and ensure the safety of participants and spectators.
  • Ensure players compete in a fair, safe, and encouraging environment.
  • Organize supplies and equipment.
  • Assist participants with skill development and improvement; monitor progress.
  • Prepare venue; inspect playing surface and/or equipment to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.
  • Maintain appropriate level of control, fairness, and consistency in all competitive situations; resolve conflicts with tact and diplomacy.
  • Attend scheduled training or evaluation sessions.
  • Keep proper records as necessary.
  • Maintain effective and consistent communication with program participants, parents, and other staff.
  • Create a positive and encouraging environment for participants in the program.
  • Arrive on time in appropriate attire at scheduled sites.
  • Clock-in and out using software operated by the City (Kronos).
  • Provide excellent service, pursue continuous improvement, and exceed expectations.

Qualifications

What you will need to be considered:
  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Have experience with and knowledge of baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, and/or speed and agility programs; prior experience providing instruction in fundamentals and skill development preferred.
  • Prior experience officiating games preferred.
  • Enjoy working with children.
  • Be responsible, dependable, and punctual, and have a high degree of maturity.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to make quick and sound decisions and to understand, carry out, and provide written and oral directions and instructions.
  • Be safety conscious and able to enforce safety rules and regulations.
  • Physical ability to lift/carry materials and repeatedly and quickly traverse the field to monitor play.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred (may be obtained through the City upon hire).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to deal with children, parents, coaches, and other staff in a positive, reassuring, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing a safe and fun atmosphere for participants, coaches, and spectators of youth programs.
  • Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
