Classification: Fulltime or Part Time

Salary Range: Hourly

Organization: Licking County Humane Society (LCHS), a 501-C-3 not-for-profit organization located in Heath, Ohio.

Vested Authority: Board of Directors (BOD)

Reports Directly To: Animal Care Supervisor

Purpose of the Position: Animal Caregivers perform all duties involved in the daily care of animals and facilitate interactions with the public.

Education and Experience:

* Must be a high school graduate or educational equivalent and be able to read, write and speak clearly in English so that written and verbal instructions can be followed.

Knowledge:

* Preferred candidates will have knowledge of healthcare, behavior, breeds, control and handling of dogs, cats and other animals. Candidates will also possess an understanding and recognition of common diseases, and considerable knowledge of safe procedures for handling animals.

Skills:

* Preferred candidates need to communicate with the public in a professional, positive, educational manner and can work cooperatively with people, regardless of the context, sometimes stressful or emotional situations.

* Protect the confidentiality of customers and donors.

* Demonstrate safe working habits for self, the animals and the public.

* We are seeking candidates that have experience with dog/cat handling with caring, patience and gentleness.

* Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Additional Requirements:

* Must be able to work evenings, holidays and weekends as assigned, meet the physical requirements of the job and the employee handbook.

* Candidates must have a valid Ohio drivers license; Ohio required personal auto insurance and is insurable through the LCHS company insurance policy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Perform cleaning and care in accordance with established procedures and training protocols.

* Willingly assist the public in all aspects of shelter programs, specific questions, adoption procedures and general information.

* Share information to enhance the publics knowledge of animal welfare and knowledge of LCHS mission and programs.

* Perform all kennel duties in accordance with established procedures and training level.

* Clean and disinfect kennel and cage areas, exam areas, showing areas and other animal care areas according to procedures set forth by the Operations Manager and Animal Care Supervisor.

* Maintain cleanliness standards throughout the day of the entire shelter.

* Feed, water, medicate and exercise animals as required for their well being. Wash dishes, perform laundry tasks, restock animal areas with supplies, and perform other activities involved with the keeping of animals.

* Assist in the adoption process by showing cats and dogs, explaining adoption procedures, discussing adoption concerns and providing printed information.

* Process incoming animals by making assessments and recommendations regarding the health, behavior and adoptability at intake, and conducting ongoing health checks. Assist in maintaining the accuracy of animal identification records in the animal care areas.

* Assist in the lab while blood draws, diagnostic testing, fecal samples, etc are performed and collected.

* Monitors and records animal drug or medication usage and ensures proper storage, handling and medicating.

* If authorized to drive company vehicles, may be required to take/pick up animals at vet clinics, residences or other places to be determined.

* Assist in maintaining the order and cleanliness of shelter facility and grounds.

* Operations Manager or Animal Care Supervisor may assign other duties.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

* This position has no supervisory responsibility.

Interactions with Others:

* Have regular contact with other shelter employees, volunteers from all departments, public during their visits to the shelter and area veterinary clinics, animal control officers, and other agencies. Contact with others will require tactful exchanges and a professional demeanor.

Working Conditions:

* Candidate will have regular contact with animals odors, disease, bites, scratches, noise and possible contagious conditions with varying temperaments and physical conditions. Work directly with animal waste, kennel cleaners and disinfectants.

Physical Demands:

* Must have the ability to stay standing or active during entire shift and be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Kneeling, using hands/ fingers and moderate noise levels. Work performed both in and out of the shelter requires lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and other strenuous activities. Worker may be required to take a physical examination paid for by LCHS prior to the start of work.

Other:

* Perform other such duties as assigned by supervisor.
