Purpose of the Role

This position manages the staff, office and field, in the daily activities of the Survey Division. Plans, organizes and directs work of one or more survey parties and office personnel to determine the location and measurements of surveying information, including points, elevations, lines, areas, contours and cad-drafting for construction staking and land surveying services. Determines and implements methods and procedures for establishing or reestablishing survey control for land surveying services, along with procedures for laying out construction sites. Coordinates work with superintendents, project managers, engineers, architects, municipalities, title companies and attorneys directly involved in the projects.

Functions / Duties

  • Coordinate with the site surveyors and superintendents to insure each party has the information, tools and schedule needed to survey the site with the most proficiency as possible
  • Analyze survey objectives and specifications in order to assist in survey proposal preparation
  • Survey or supervise the layout of the construction sites, including building, utilities, curb and gutter, paving and overlot grading
  • Assist project team in coordinating any surveying needed in preconstruction or close out services, such as, verification of site topography, As-built plans, and detention pond certifications
  • Monitor survey costs and assist in taking corrective actions achieving budgets
  • Coordinate with estimators to establish budgets for the construction project
  • Develop criteria for survey layout methods and procedures
  • Analyze or supervise the fieldwork in order to calculate the location of the property corners of the parcel of land surveyed
  • Develop and implement a maintenance program for Saunders construction survey equipment
  • Other duties as assigned


Knowledge / Skills / Abilities / Qualifications / Experience

  • Educational and experience to include a minimum of 5 years of progressive surveying experience. Preferably, the manager is a Professional/Registered licensed surveyor
  • Needs to have knowledge of mathematics such as algebra, trigonometry and basic arithmetic
  • Proficient in Microsoft office programs "Office" and "Excel" and an understanding of "Autocad"
  • BIM experience preferred, but not required

Physical Demands

The following are some of the physical demands commonly associated with this position:

  • Spends approximately 70% of the time sitting, and 30% of the time either standing or walking while on the job.
  • Occasionally* lifts up to 15 lbs, when moving project binders, office supplies or files, and may stoop, kneel, crouch, and balance while performing these same functions.
  • Occasionally required to climb, crawl, stoop and negotiate ladders, stairs or other routes at and within project sites in order to fulfill duties.
  • Constantly uses verbal and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as E-Mail, telephone and radio.
  • Constantly employs eye, hand and finger coordination enabling the use of office machinery such as computer keyboard.
  • Constantly utilizes full scope of visual capacity to travel to project sites and observe/verify project progress in addition to operating automated office equipment.
