Job description

BASIC FUNCTION:

The NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology (NCAS-M) at Howard University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Research Scientist position to work on aerosol-cloud interaction studies. The proposed activities involve coordinating observations from Raman Lidar installed close to the Washington DC metropolitan area. The position requires to assist with managing research activities of projects (e.g., research design, IRB approval, data collection, data analysis) and research products (e.g., writing, and presentations), supervising students, and developing new research directions and proposals within the scope of group's research thrusts.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Rebuild and maintain the Raman lidar system located at the Howard University Beltsville Campus.
  • Collaborate with other NOAA weather research laboratories on airborne and ground-based measurements.
  • Collaborate with other researchers concerning the relationships between Raman lidar profiler observations and storm evolution.
  • Assist with managing research projects (e.g., research design, IRB approval, data collection, data analysis), and research products (e.g., writing, presentations)
  • Retrieval algorithm development and performs complex statistical analyses which includes selecting appropriate analysis procedures, setting up data for analysis, judging the validity and reliability of data, designing, and writing programs to perform the analyses, and producing written reports on the result of the analysis.
  • Contributes to the overall development of the NCAS-M atmospheric boundary layer program and participates in the mentorship of graduate research assistants.
  • Publish peer-reviewed scientific papers and present results at national/international conferences.
  • Collaborate on additional research projects within NCAS-M and across the broader scientific community.

CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Strong experience of Raman lidar system, data evaluation, computational skills and fluency in English are essential for this post.
  • Experience with lidar microphysical retrievals algorithms is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of and experience with mesoscale, clouds and water cycle is essential.
  • Other experiences include using high-performance computers, ability to perform independent research, strong verbal, and written communication skills.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Ph.D. received within the last 3 years in atmospheric sciences or a closely related field. Demonstration of organizational skills with the ability to work effectively in teams is essential. Additionally, working independently to produce reports and publish research results in peer-reviewed journals is required.
