Summary:
Reporting to the Housing Operations Manager, the Staff Residential Assistant (SRA) works and maintains front desk operation, assisting in the administration, service, and security of the residence halls, serving as the point of contact for residents, visitors, and persons outside of the Gallaudet University community, and demonstrating professionalism and customer service while responding quickly and effectively in emergencies.

Job Description:
  • Maintains a positive and professional customer service attitude that is supportive of the University and Residence Life and Housing by demonstrating a friendly demeanor that is welcoming and inclusive to all who approach the front desk.
  • Works with the Coordinators of Residence Education (CREs) in the residence halls to ensure an efficient front desk operation and information sharing.
  • Ensures different offices and services available to students at the University to accurately answer questions or make appropriate referrals to residents and visitors.
  • Responds to all calls and emails sent to the front desk email account.
  • Receives and reports requests for repairs, maintenance, refunds, and lock changes.
  • Maintains and completes accurate front desk logs, such as spare keys, equipment, lockout, and other important logs.
  • Supports access and key management by maintaining and completing accurate key inventories and key reports in addition to key requests.
  • Maintains complete and accurate notes in the communication log at the beginning and end of each shift and be aware of notes from others' shifts.
  • Enforces and upholds all University and Residence Life and Housing policies and procedures.
  • Remains attentive to building activity including doing rounds of walkthrough of space, particularly concerning access and fire safety.
  • Remains alert to any emergency or other condition that may require attention and assist in implementation of emergency procedures and crisis response and inform Residence Life and Housing and Public Safety as appropriate.
  • Protects confidential student information to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Attends and participates in SRA training and regular staff meetings.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
  • Performs related and other duties as needed.


Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of some experience with office administration, student services, residence life, or a related field (college student work and/or internship will be considered).
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a collegiate residential setting that contains deaf and hard of hearing populations.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.

  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.


Additional Position Details:
  • The hourly rate is $21.00 per hour.
  • This is a one-year extended temporary staff position with some benefits including health insurance, paid vacation and sick time, and paid holidays.
  • The extended temporary appointment may be renewed for another year or has an opportunity to convert to regular status with full benefits.
  • This full-time position works forty (40) hours per week overnight and include weekends following one of the schedule options:
    • Wednesdays through Sundays from 12:00 A.M. to 8:30 A.M.
    • Fridays through Tuesdays from 12:00 A.M. to 8:30 A.M.
