The School was established in 1909 by the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation.Our mission is to prepare boys in grades 4 through 12 to develop and use their spiritual, intellectual, artistic, and physical gifts not for themselves alone, but in service of the greater community. Description

St. Albans School seeks qualified, highly motivated individuals to work with its high school and middle school athletic programs. Reporting to the Head Program Coach, the Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting with coaching in accordance with applicable rules and regulations. Specifically, areas of responsibilities will include:

  • Teach sport-specific skills and techniques in group settings and individually;
  • Implement the teaching of skills, tactics, and team systems per the head coach's philosophy and strategies;
  • Develop a working knowledge and understanding of The Core Values of The St. Albans Athlete and teach within the context of the Core Values
  • Follow the head coach's instructions in practice planning, executing practice plans and drills, game strategies, and game management;
  • Support the head coach's teaching and messaging regarding all aspects of the management of the team;
  • At head coach's direction review and break down game and practice video;
  • At head coach's direction, monitor locker rooms, attend non-practice/game team meetings and events, and ride on buses to away games;
  • Model appropriate behavior including emotional control, patience, sportsmanship, and respectful interactions with opponents and game officials;
  • Understand and maintain appropriate boundaries in the coach/player relationship;
  • Communicate with players only through approved school-based technology;
  • Inform the head coach of all individual player communication outside of practices and games;
  • Direct all parent inquiries to the head coach and only engage parents in individual parent conversations about their son or the team at the direction of the head coach;


The position may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Experience: Relevant Coaching or Playing Experience
Education: NA
Certifications: NA
Schedule: High School:

Practices: Mondays-Fridays 3:30pm-6:00pm and selected Saturdays and school holidays.

Games: Weekday afternoons, some weekday evenings and some Saturdays and school holidays.

Middle School:

Practices: Mondays-Thursdays 2:00-3:30pm.
Games: Weekday afternoons.

Term: Fall, Winter or Spring Athletic Season as follows:

Fall: August 14 - November 14
Winter: November 14 - February 19
Spring: February 19- May 30
Compensation: As Stated in Employment Letter

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Consistent reliable attendance at practices and games;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the skills, tactics and strategies necessary for success in the specific sport one is coaching;
  • Ability to evaluate an individual player's skills, identify areas of deficiency, and teach drills and techniques to improve deficiencies;
  • Ability to teach sport-specific skills and tactics individually and in groups;
  • Knowledge of sport-specific injury risks and ability to teach generally accepted and school-approved techniques that are designed to minimize injury risk;
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills;
  • Successful completion of previous experience verification, background checks, and student safety programs;
  • Strong customer service skills and a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work and thrive in teams;
  • Ability to independently plan, organize, and coordinate multiple tasks;
  • Demonstrated strategic skills in short- and long-term planning, facilitation, and collaboration;
  • Ability to negotiate, mitigate conflict, and build alliances;
  • Experience managing people and teams to achieve desired results;
  • Creative, innovative, and strategic thinking ability;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;

COVID-19

St. Albans School requires all employees to meet our current COVID-19 vaccination requirements or have been granted a medical or religious exemption from those requirements.
