About TechnoServe

Everyone deserves the opportunity to build a better future. This simple idea has been at the heart of TechnoServe's work around the world for over 50 years. TechnoServe is a pioneer in leveraging the power of businesses and markets to create sustainable pathways out of poverty.

The low-income communities in which we work are full of enterprising people. Their small-scale farms and businesses are the keys to economic development. But they face many challenges: low literacy, lack of access to jobs and markets, unpredictable political dynamics and, increasingly, the effects of climate change. For many women and young people, the challenges are even more daunting. Working with TechnoServe staff, people around the world, are lifting themselves out of poverty. The results are amazing...when incomes increase and living conditions for families get better, they are able to access health care and education previously out of reach. Communities and even whole countries are better off.

Project Overview

Building on the current Developing Inclusive Grains Value Chain in Nigeria (DIGVCN) program, TechnoServe and Nestle have designed an add-on to the current program to support 1,000-grain farmers to adopt RA practices in Kaduna state. TechnoServe and Nestle will partner over a one-year period to strengthen RA practice adoption among maize, sorghum, and soy farmers.

The partnership will support 1,000 smallholder farmers, and four aggregators with necessary training and capacity building to transition towards regenerative agriculture practices that meet Nestl's standards.

The objective of the add-on project is to promote a more resilient and low-carbon grains sector in Nigeria by supporting 1,000 smallholder farmers to build their capacity on Regenerative Agriculture practices of maize, sorghum, and soy farmers in Kaduna with the ambition to drive the adoption of RA practices after the 1-year period. This will reduce emissions, improve soil health, enhance resilience, and increase food productivity over time.

The project will achieve this objective of capacity building of farmers using hands-on training and demonstrations, progress monitoring, linkage to appropriate inputs, and access to finance and premium market. The proposed project will leverage Nestl's plan to offtake grains produced using RA practices at premium prices. This will raise farmer incomes as an incentive to encourage participation and adoption of recommended practices.
