**Description**

The Custodian II is responsible for modeling the way in ensuring compliance with Aquarium custodial policies and procedures, and implementing creative solutions to provide exceptional service and protect the Aquarium. This position is assigned to an area for any given shift, and is expected to be available to the team of Custodians to support needs and provide guidance as needed, always following Aquarium policies and procedures while keeping in mind the Aquarium values of Integrity, Innovation, Service, Excellence, and Engagement.

**Essential Functions:**

Custodian Duties

* Perform various cleaning tasks on a scheduled basis and as needed. Areas of accountability include, but are not limited to bathrooms, carpets & floors, trash, compost & recycling receptacles, mirrors & windows, counters & shelves, escalators & movealators, elevators, employee office & break rooms and restrooms, Waterfront Park, loading dock, stairwells, specific areas of exhibits, such as the outside of tanks & viewing windows, ceilings, special event rooms, and other assigned areas.

* Support efforts to clean and maintain safety standards during weather emergencies, including snow removal, ice melting, etc.

* Ensure that the quality of cleanliness in assigned work area meets or exceeds standards.

* Ensure that all equipment is safe and in good operating condition after use, cleaned and stored in its proper place. Report unsafe equipment.

* Provide exceptional guest service that transforms a day at the Aquarium from ordinary to extraordinary:

+ Greet all guests in line of sight with a smile, a verbal greeting, and assertive friendliness

+ Host each guest by demonstrating behavior that supports a positive, cheerful and professional attitude

+ Ensure knowledge is current by using resources available: the Daily Navigator, Yammer, morning Huddle, Plan of the Day, email announcements, etc. s

+ Ensure skills are kept fresh by attending all training classes and offerings as requested

+ Project a professional image while in uniform and when using the phone or radio

+ Become familiar with the Aquariums story history, accomplishments and future goals

+ Go beyond what is expected deliver Personal Facilitated Experiences (PFEs) that inspire, delight, and engage

* Adhere to all organizational and departmental policies and procedures

* Other duties as assigned or required.

Safety

* Ensure the safety of staff & guests by following established and ad hoc safety policies and procedures, including but not limited to:

+ Ensure emergency and evacuation situations are successfully and smoothly executed, including providing staff and guests with emergency exit information and assistance.

+ Use available resources to ensure service levels stay high when in situations / conditions beyond our control.

+ Ensure team complies with ADA regulations and related Aquarium policies

+ Monitor all areas to ensure a safe environment, acting appropriately when needed to secure an area, address a concern, and/or report potential safety hazards.

Shift Leader Duties

* Support team members as needed to ensure successful completion of routine and special project cleaning.

* Support team with securing adequate supplies, material and equipment to work with at the start and during the course of the shift.

* Make minor repairs to equipment as needed; report needed repair work to department managers.

* Provide first- and second-level service recovery as needed through active listening and offering solutions that successfully balance guest & Aquarium needs. Understand when to solve the problem and when to engage a department manager or leader. Write and review incident reports as needed, ensuring department managers are updated as appropriate.

* Act as mediator regarding staff member conflicts, understanding when to solve the problem and when to engage a department manager or leader.

* Support the guest experience by being a role model of an informed Aquarium representative, committed to living the Aquariums values.

* Observe team performance and relay feedback and concerns to department managers as needed, including during the annual review process

* Participate in recruitment by meeting candidates and making recommendations to the managers as requested

* Participate as needed or requested in regular department manager meetings to present observations, challenges and creative solutions.

* Ensure team members are updated and knowledgeable about Aquarium current events by helping lead the Daily Huddle, distributing Plan of the Day, and providing updates as needed.

* Provide training to all new hires and ensure consistent messaging and communication of expectations. Ensure proper handling and safety of chemicals and other supplies is communicated and learned. Assist with keeping printed training materials and operations guides up to date.

* Support the Supervisor with weekly and monthly inventory of supplies, materials and equipment checks when required.

* Assist with the ordering and purchasing of materials of supplies and materials when required.

* Assist with the posting and completion of work orders when required and to ensure that all work orders are completed correctly and on time.

**QUALIFICATIONS:**

* At least 1 year of experience cleaning, including using standard cleaning equipment such as floor buffers and waxers

* At least 6 months of experience supervising custodial teams / work

* Must be enthusiastic, motivated and enjoy working with people

* Strong communication skills and ability to engage Aquarium guests of all ages

* Strong basic computer skills, to include using email and navigating the internet

* Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings/overnights, weekends, and holidays

* Ability and willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions

* Ability to work with a team and independently

* Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
