The Opportunity:

The Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment Specialist (CIA) will be responsible for coordinating the school curriculum in adherence to the Maryland State Department of Education requirements. The CIA will be responsible for assisting teachers in conducting informal and formal assessments, case management for IEPs, and state assessment management. The CIA will ensure that research-based, best practices for students with autism and related disabilities will form the core of instruction in an individually designed, differentiated program that meets the needs of the students. In conjunction with the Assistant Education Director and Education Director the CIA will provide oversight to the school program's communities by monitoring curriculum, instruction, and assessments, to ensure compliance with MSDE learning goals, COMAR regulations, and Local School Systems.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a variety of formal and informal assessments on student skill levels and produce the corresponding reports and documents as needed.
  • Provide training to special educators on how to utilize informal and formal assessments.
  • Utilize the information gathered through assessments to assist special educators in developing appropriate IEP goals, objectives, and related areas on the IEP.
  • Edit and provide feedback to teachers on writing progress reports.
  • Instruct, train and monitor special educators teachers on data collection procedures as related to IEP goals and objectives.
  • Graph and analyze data collected based on academic goals and objectives.
  • Work collaboratively with behavior staff, related service providers, and Local School System representatives.
  • Provide on-going training to special educators on curriculum development and implementation.
  • Provide special educators ongoing constructive feedback related to lesson plans, instructional techniques, and classroom management.
  • Assist special educators in creating a classroom schedule that meets the needs of their students and adheres to expectations from the MSDE and LSS's.
  • Provide individual, classroom, and community-wide trainings regarding learning strategies effective for students with autism and related disabilities (e.g., reinforcement schedules, prompt hierarchies, and general classroom management techniques)
  • Conduct ongoing observations and provide ongoing training and feedback to staff based on the observations.
  • Consult with special educators on lesson planning that adheres to state standards and IEP implementation.
  • Coordinate individual, classroom, team, and community-wide meetings as needed to discuss programming, student needs, and other important information.
  • Provide educational support to classroom staff in the absence of a classroom teacher.
  • Set up regular workshops for special educators, staff and parents on instructional methodologies and curriculum as needed.
  • Work in conjunction with the Assistant Education Director, Transition Specialist, and classroom teachers to develop Community-Based Instruction.
  • Work in conjunction with the Assistant Education Director on on-boarding new staff to Linwood School.
  • Provide training to and mentor new special educators to Linwood School.
  • Serve as the school testing coordinating (STC) for the required Maryland State Assessments to adhere to all regulations and rules, by attending trainings, organizing and implementing school wide state testing.
  • Collaborates and engages with school leadership and administration team to improve school efficiency, maintain department compliance and ensure students' successful mastery of targeted IEP goals and objectives
  • Adheres to Linwood School policies and procedures


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master's Degree in Special Education, Psychology, or a related field
  • A valid Maryland professional teaching certificate in special education.
  • Must have at least three (3) years' experience as a classroom teacher for students with autism
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the IEP process and possess the skillset to support the development and implementation of students' IEPs
  • Requires a high level of interpersonal and professional skills to interact effectively with Linwood staff, parents, school system personnel and other professionals
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills
  • Demonstrate a strong knowledge base in curriculum and educational techniques
  • Must possess the ability to train others


Related Training:

CPR training will be provided by the Linwood organization. Employee must achieve and maintain certification.
PCM training will be provided by the Linwood Center. Employee must achieve and maintain certification at the Practitioner level (or higher).
