Job Description

Joseph and Judith STEAM Education Center

This position is responsible for the planning, organization,management and execution of the educational educational strategies and curriculum for the Joseph and Judith Conda STEAM Education Center.

Creative, knowledgeable, team-oriented, and dependable educator who enjoys working with people. Passionate about learning and teaching science, technology, engineering, arts, and math curriculum. Strong public speaking, organizational and interpersonal skills are required. The STEAM Educator will display a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in all aspects of their work.

Mazza Museum

This position is responsible for the planning, organization, and direct management of key educational strategies and curriculum for the Mazza Museum and satellite galleries. The Education Manager serves as the premier contact for the recruitment and management of volunteers, graduate assistants, student workers, and educational committees, while also leading docent training.

Essential Functions

This position requires regular attendance in the office, Museum, Art Room, STEAM Center, and Planetarium environments.

Educational Programming
  • Develops educational content in alignment with state standards for all students and teachers visiting the museum, Conda STEAM Center, satellite galleries and Zoo educational programs.
  • Plans and leads docent training and enrichment in conjunction while recruiting and managing members of the docent training committee.
  • Customizes school and community-based tours and STEAM Center educational experiences with with educators based on curriculum needs at the primary, secondary and university levels.
  • Creates and produces virtual programming for the museum and Conda STEAM Center including educational material, virtual tours, docent training, and communication.
  • Develops programming and recruits committee members, volunteers, and UF academic programs for Funday Sunday events (the Mazza and STEAM Center community program with the highest attendance throughout the year).
  • Directs all efforts for Mazza Summer Art Camp, STEAM Camp, and STEAM Club, including: preparation of curriculum, budgeting, purchasing, floor plan layout, staffing, and instructing both volunteers and students.
  • Formulates an innovative curriculum plan for students and visitors at the Conda STEAM Center by specifically integrating the art of picture books into the STEAM programming.
  • Creates art projects and curriculum-based activities that directly correlates with the guest authors/illustrators and the picture books used for the Literacy in the Park, an annual promotional even for Mazza.
  • Trains, schedules, and mentors the graduate assistants and Mazza student employees throughout the entire academic year.
  • Recruits new volunteers, provides enrichment training for existing docents, manages and schedules all volunteers for museum activities and off-site community events.
  • Supervises the Traveling Mazza Art program.
  • Produces the Mazza puppet show in addition to crafting the set design.
  • Creates and develops K-12 Educational Events at Mazza and the STEAM Educational Center.
  • Schedules and supervises both staff and volunteers for numerous outreach events.
  • Assists with the Summer and Weekend Conferences.
  • Updates the Corridor Hunts and Museum Hallway hunt.
  • Creates scavenger hunts for students.
  • Responsible for creating reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to participate in tours and other activities
  • Coordinates school tours and schedules visitors for all activities in the Museum, Steam Education Center, and Planetarium.
  • Oversees and supports the Mazza Extension Program.
  • Develops curriculum for visiting educators and collaborates directly with campus faculty.
  • Orders all necessary supplies for Mazza Museum, the Joseph and Judith Conda STEAM Educational Center, and any Mazza affiliated activities.
  • Reconciles all receipts related to educational equipment and technology purchases for Mazza Museum and the STEAM Center.
  • Creates and assists in exhibition design, preparation, and art selection. Collaborates with local schools, artists, business professionals, and UF Faculty.
  • Maintains all data collection and analysis for the Mazza Museum and STEAM Center.
  • Creates and facilitates Professional Development and Team Bonding programs for teachers, staff, and outside organizations.
  • Develops observation plans and distributes tour and event surveys in order to maintain high-quality programming.
  • Works in collaboration with the University of Findlay Advancement team to meet University of Findlay objectives.
  • Creates and distributes graphics for flyers, posters, and signage for Mazza Museum educational events.
  • Collaborates with the Mazza Museum Director and the Director of Curation & Exhibitions.
  • Researches and sources cutting-edge technology and equipment to be used for both virtual and in-person content.
  • Responsible for cleaning, maintaining, setting up, and tearing down events in the Mazza Art Room and the STEAM Center.
  • Produces audio tours and visual introductions for visitors, tours, and promotional usage.
  • Designs illustration rubric for Tell a Tale annual contest in conjunction with the Hancock County Library and Hancock Literacy Association.
  • Coordinates, develops, orders, and preps all material for outreach programing.
  • Works closely with University of Findlay Grant Manager for financial resources.
  • Performs all other duties deemed appropriate for this position.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, year-round position.

The role requires the employee to be in-office, Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. However, evening work is often required and weekend responsibilities are to be expected.

Physical Demands

While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The employee is frequently required to be on their feet for up to five (5) hours at a time; stand; walk; sit; reach with arms and hands; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; move or lift at least 25 pounds. This position also requires the ability to lift, move and organize bins of art supplies throughout the museum, STEAM Center, Art room, Malcolm Dining Hall, Great Hall, and within indoor and outdoor storage. The employee must be able to lift files and open filing cabinets while bending or standing, as necessary.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time 12-month position, and general hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with many evening and weekend responsibilities.

Work Environment of this Job

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions; and required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including a lab coat, safety glasses/goggles, and/or gloves. Employee may be required to use various chemicals with Material Safety Data Sheets provided. Employee may be required to use high voltage electricity. Employee may need to use very hot or very cold liquids. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Travel

Some travel is required for this position. Off-site educational events, presentations, speaking events, and many community outreach events.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree. Three years of relative office experience. The Education Manager must be a "self-starter" and work with little or no supervision. Classroom teaching experience. Experience in designing educational programming for K-12 and college students

Preferred Education and Experience

Master's degree. Active engagement in the arts and education sectors. Prior experience working with volunteers. Familiarity with museum-based programming, inquiry-based and student-centered teaching methods, and positive youth development models; exposure in either Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, or Mathematics. Knowledge of effective STEAM teaching techniques is beneficial.
