Purpose of Position

To promote a positive presence in the community; and, conduct field work for the department in a safe and collaborative manner while supporting the probationer's case plan goals. To successfully fulfill the essential job functions, one must be able to interact with accused and/or convicted criminal offenders.
Essential Job Functions & Competencies

  • Conduct field visits, transports, searches and field arrests of offenders;
  • Make community/site visits to collateral agencies and treatment providers as needed;
  • Review the offender's compliance with Court-ordered conditions;
  • Review information regarding cases;
  • Provide positive reinforcement to, and builds rapport with offenders;
  • Coordinate and collaborate with supervising officer to timely communicate field work information to assist with overall supervision;
  • Utilize automated case management system to enter data in the office and while in the field;
  • Appear in court when necessary;
  • Maintain a professional demeanor during stressful situations;
  • Respond courteously to inquiries;
  • Maintain proficiency and applicable certification with all job and training requirements;
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending professional training and conferences;
  • Adhere to assigned work schedule while exhibiting regular and predictable attendance;
  • Qualify and maintain OPOTA certification to carry a department issued firearm while conducting field work;
  • Shall successfully complete a firearms requalification program approved by the executive director of the Ohio peace officer training commission in accordance with rules adopted by the attorney general pursuant to section 109.743 of the Revised Code;
  • Properly maintain and secure firearm, based upon the department's maintenance schedule;
  • Develop and sustain productive working relationship with local law enforcement;
  • Maintain professional conduct and attire; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or closely related field, or equivalent experience (applicant may substitute 2 years of related experience for each year of required education).
  • One-year experience involving:
    1. community supervision of offenders (probation, parole);
    2. counseling; or
    3. maintaining a caseload in a case management setting.
  • Must have successfully completed a basic firearm training program that is approved by the executive director of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission or are able to do so within 120 days of employment.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a firearm qualification utilizing the department-issued firearm and requalify annually.
  • Must be able to successfully obtain a medical and psychological recommendation to carry a firearm for the department.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current certification approved by the executive director of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission of a basic firearm training program.
  • Three years' experience involving:
    1. community supervision of offenders (probation or parole);
    2. counseling; or
    3. maintaining a caseload in a case management setting.
  • Three (3) years' of experience conducting field work in community corrections or law enforcement setting.
