Job description

The Talent Acquisition department hires qualified candidates to fill positions which contribute to the overall strategic success of Howard University. Hiring staff "for fit" makes significant contributions to Howard University's overall mission.

JOB PURPOSE:

The person in this position will report directly to the Department Associate Chair and the position is professional non-instructional. Basic functions include 1) advising students majoring and minoring in Biology (primarily transfers, juniors and seniors) in academic schedules, degree completion, and career goals; 2) meeting regularly with students individually and in groups as needed; 3) assessing academic needs of student populations and making recommendations to the Chair and Associate Chair about how to address the needs.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

Involves no responsibility or authority for the direction of others

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This position requires full knowledge of the graduation requirements for Department of Biology major and minors. This includes department-, college-, and university- level requirements. Internal contacts include Chair, Associate Chair, Office Manager, Director of Undergraduate Research, Lab Program Coordinator, other Lab Coordinators, Administrative Assistant, and other staff. External contacts may include Dean's Office, Provost's Office (Office of Undergraduate Studies), and the general public.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Manage, inform, counsel, and advise students individually or in groups as appropriate on program degree progress, course selection, class scheduling and registration, and other related issues;
  • Assist students with identifying goals and career choices;
  • Assure compliance of all University policies such as those required by FERPA;
  • Maintain confidential student evaluations;
  • Maintain records of all advising;
  • Attend student recruitment fairs and engage other prospective students as needed;
  • Serve on appropriate Departmental, College, or University committees; and
  • Serve in any other capacity to assure smooth Department operations for student advising.


CORE COMPETENCIES:

Must be highly organized and be able to work independently; have effective listening skills; and have proficiency and experience in using related software applications to perform a variety of project assignments (e.g. Canvas, BisonSafe, Blackboard, BisonWeb, BANNER, MS Office, Adobe, Google docs, MS Teams, Workday, etc.). Competence in both oral and written English to communicate in a clear and concise manner. Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, students, and the general public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in science or science education or equivalent and 1-3 years of related work experience. Eight (8) years of related work experience may be substituted in lieu of educational qualifications.
