Duties

As a Police Officer in the Security Protective Service (SPS) for CIA, you will protect CIA personnel, facilities, and information through the enforcement of Federal laws and Agency Regulations. You will control access to and egress from Agency facilities utilizing preventive measures or actions that mitigate hostile threats against Agency workforce, property, or information. Police Officers exercise full law enforcement authority, including making arrests and enforcing traffic laws in Agency jurisdiction. You are also the primary first responder to all emergencies on Agency facilities. In medical emergencies, you will provide basic first aid, trauma response, CPR, and AED response. Police Officers maintain public order during emergency situations, facilitating safe and thorough evacuations when necessary. In addition to these protective functions, as a Police Officer you will effectively represent the Agency and communicate with members of the public.

SPS provides a full range of high-quality security and police services through a variety of fixed posts, patrol operations, and specialty units. Specialty unit assignments are filled through competitive vacancy processes and include K-9, bomb squad, hazmat, emergency planning, security operations, and court liaison.

Newly hired Security Protective Service Cadets must complete an intensive twelve (12) week, Uniformed Police Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia, or qualify for a FLETC waiver. To qualify for a FLETC waiver, you must have graduated from FLETC and usually performed full-time. Following graduation from FLETC, you will complete an additional ten (10) weeks of specialized instruction at SPS training facilities. You will then transition to Officer-in-Training (OIT) status where you will be individually assigned to an SPS Field Training Officer for operational training and final evaluations before appointment as Police Officers.

SPS training includes coursework in police procedures, psychology, police-community relations, criminal law, first aid, laws of arrest, search and seizure, and physical defense techniques. You will continue to develop your skills by attending annual in-service training, stressing defensive tactics, legal issues, HAZMAT, CPR training, and firearms proficiency.

Police Officers routinely work eight-hour shifts to include weekends and holidays and may occasionally be directed to work overtime.
