Safety Manager

Job description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and all regulatory standards including but not limited to Hazard communication, lockout/tag out, confined space entry, hearing conservation, machine guarding, ergonomics, PPE, respiratory protection, electrical safety, fall protection.
  • Accompany all safety, health, and insurance inspectors on walk through inspections.
  • Coordinate, administer, and enforce safety training programs.
  • Provide training in hazard identification, incident analysis and OSHA compliance for safety committee members, supervisors, and managers.
  • Maintain a positive safety culture while ensuring company compliance with all company, federal, and state health, safety, and environmental agencies.
  • Coordinate with insurance carrier's safety representatives.
  • Conduct formal facility-wide safety inspections with facility leadership.
  • Develop a job safety analysis (JSA) program for all job functions in each distribution center and recommend improvements to prevent future accidents and/or improve ergonomics.
  • Develop a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required KPI reporting. Create action plans based on the analysis of collected data to improve overall workplace safety.
  • Develop emergency evacuation plans and maps.
  • Manage an effective first aid/responder program.
  • Organize and facilitate a safety champions program at each worksite.
  • Work with HR workers' compensation specialist to follow high-cost or precedent-setting cases.
  • Facilitates safety activities.
  • Investigates both near miss and work-related injuries, completes necessary forms and reports, collaborates with managers to determine corrective actions, as needed, and recommends additional training, as applicable.
  • Performs hazard analysis/abatement reviews.
  • Provides safety communications (postings, employee meetings, etc.).

  • Assists with PPE management to include assessments, availability of supplies, vendor management and support.
  • Work closely with corporate and branch leadership to improve the overall health and safety of employees.
  • Intervenes in unsafe activities or operations.

  • Performs safety audits and inspections.
  • Coordinate's safety meeting topics and training materials.
  • Ensures daily & weekly safety meetings are held.
  • Provides weekly safety updates to the executive team.
  • Extensive travel is required to visit all site facilities, including overnight as needed.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • College degree in safety management, occupational environment health and safety, or a related field;2-3 years related safety experience in distribution or manufacturing; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Fabrication industry knowledge and/or construction knowledge a strong plus.


CERTIFICATION, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • OSHA 30-hour Certification.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Certified forklift trainer.


SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced high-speed environment, prioritize and manage multiple tasks, change priorities as necessary.
  • Ability to work under time pressure and adapt to changing requirements with a positive attitude.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills as required for the position.
  • Strong organizational, record-keeping and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of employees, both management and staff alike, vendors, clients, and others.

  • Proficient in using a computer and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Adobe, Word, Excel, etc.).

  • Ability to be self-motivated, proactive, and an effective team player.

  • Understanding of site-specific project safety requirements.

  • Ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Self-motivation, taking initiative to make improvements.
  • Good understanding of OSHA Regulations.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; have finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination; and reach with hands and arms.The employee frequently is required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.The employee is occasionally required to sit.The employee must be able to routinely lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to use sense of smell.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes of airborne particles.The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The warehouse/shop space is not climate controlled.
