Job description

** Supervisory Food Service Specialist**

**Department of Health And Human Services**

** Clinical Center/ Nutrition Department**

**If you have experience managing a food service program in a clinical environment and you want to play a significant role in a dynamic organization, then consider joining the NIH Clinical Center, Nutrition Department.**

**This position is located in the Food Services Section of the Nutrition Department and is responsible for food quality, food, paper and chemical procurement, food safety, cost control, and customer satisfaction in the FoodServices Section** **Location**

+ **Duties**

* Manages overall food production for Clinical Center inpatients and outpatients including: ordering, receiving, storage, inventory, meal production and meal preparation.

* Establishes and monitors proper methods of food quality, safety, production, inventory, receiving and storage.

* Ensures all food safety procedures and standards are adhered to in accordance with FDA Food Code, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), food safety principles and Joint Commission standards.

* Monitors established food time and temperature standards for compliance by staff.

* Monitors and takes corrective action on all refrigerators and freezers that are out of compliance with temperature standards and any other malfunctioning kitchen equipment.

* Creates standard recipes and specialized recipes and preparation methods to meet the nutritional, cultural, ethnic and individual needs of patients.

* Reviews and revises the general menu for inpatients on a seasonal basis, ensuring that the food served will meet safety, quality and dietary/research expectations and requirements.

* Ensures stock levels are maintained and expedites deliveries as needed.

* Requires bending, pushing, frequent walking, standing, stooping, reaching, stretching, unpacking and/or tagging supplies and equipment and carrying moderately heavy items such as personal computers, equipment, food, paper and chemical supplies.

* Requires occasional visitation of patients rooms on patient care units and potential exposure to infectious diseases.

* Work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomforts associated with production areas, such as exposure to odors or fumes used in work processes; working near operating kitchen equipment (knives, conveyors, ovens, etc.).

* Work situation requires the employees to continually stay alert and to take special safety precautions, including wearing special protective items of clothing.

** Qualifications**

**In order to qualify for a Supervisory Food Service Specialist at the GS-11 level, if you meet one (1) of the following qualification requirements:**

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to: **manage or supervise a food service program; select and modify menus to meet a variety of dietary needs (i.e., gluten free, immune suppressed low iodine); conduct sanitation and nutrition surveys of food services programs; conduct inventories of food and food supplies and ensuring proper levels are maintained; and review contractor and vendor performance to ensure that customer complaints are resolved**;

OR

B. Completion of a Ph. D degree in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university or equivalent graduate degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or possession of a LLM degree, if related;

OR

C. A combination of post baccalaureate education and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
