ABOUT THE JOB :

MCDOT is seeking a Survey CADD Technician ( Civil Works Designer ) position that will serve in the Department of Transportation; Division of Transportation Engineering (DTE); Transportation Planning and Design Section. The employee will be responsible for creating, developing, analyzing, preparing and presenting recommendations concerning design options, and for preparing design drawings for the maintenance, alteration, or construction of all aspects of selected projects (or portions of same), of the Montgomery County Transportation System (i.e., roads, bridges, storm drainage systems, park and ride lots, sidewalks, and bikeways).

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING :

MCDOTDivision of Transportation Engineering, Design Section, seeks a Civil Works Designer who will conduct research for available survey control, conduct deed searches, perform boundary research, obtain utility plans, process field survey notes, process raw data files to prepare topographic surveys and digital terrain models, guiding field survey crews on the scope of survey work, enter data from plats and deeds into coordinate geometry software, and perform travers computations.

Other duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Using traverse and field survey data to prepare deed mosaics;
  • Computing search ties;
  • Downloading data from field surveys and makes corrections as necessary;
  • Processing data to prepare topographic maps using AUTOCADD files;
  • Creating and editing Digital Terrain Models;
  • Performing computations for the baseline of construction stakeout survey'
  • Preparing right-of-way plats and easement plats, all under the guidance of a licensed surveyor;
  • Reviewing plats for compliance with County Standards.
  • Reading, interpreting, and utilizing different types of engineering plans and specifications to convey their meaning to others and/or to assist in preparation of preliminary and final design plans for transportation projects, such as roadway, sidewalk, or drainage improvement projects;
  • Developing sections and details for construction plans;
  • Compiling, sorting processing, and/or querying data for use in GIS databases and maps;
  • Preparing displays for public meetings or presentations;
  • The incumbent may need to contact other agencies for information, such as horizontal and vertical control or utility information;
  • Performing other duties as required.

  • You have excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • You have excellent CADD skills.You can easily import field survey data to appropriate CADD graphic layers and apply labeling and file association.
  • You have excellent skills in compiling, sorting, querying data and creating GIS layers, maps, and other graphics and/or tables.
  • You work well with others; yet, you enjoy working autonomously to complete tasks and projects on time.
  • You are organized and detail oriented.
  • You are a problem-solver who can develop creative solutions.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :

This position REQUIRES the possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to attend meetings and perform work at locations outside the office, including locations throughout Montgomery County and other places in the Washington Metropolitan region. These locations may not be accessible by public transportation.

The employee is required to visit sites to make field investigations, and/or observe construction. Hazards include those requiring the use of hard hats, eye protection, foot protection and reflective vests worn when working in moving traffic. Physical effort involves occasional standing for long periods and/or walking over rough and uneven project sites, and occasional stooping, bending, reaching, and climbing at construction sites.

To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state and County laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory training within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.

The anticipated salary range in hiring for this position is:
  • Current:$59,263 - $76,624;
  • After January 14, 2024:$61,041 - $78,923.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience : Extensive (seven (7) years) experience in an applicable technical engineering field that has required the application of principles of complex mathematics (e.g., advanced algebra, geometry, and trigonometry) and basic civil engineering practices and techniques.

Education : Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

Equivalency : An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Preferred Criteria

There are no Preferred Criteria Assessments .All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications.Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated "Qualified," placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for interview.Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are the same grade or higher will be placed on Eligible List as a "Transfer" candidate and may be considered for interview.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:
  • Experience in conducting deed searches and boundary research.
  • Experience using computer hardware and engineering design, survey and/or scanning processing software specifically such as Autodesk Civil 3 D, Leica Infinity, StarNet and Register 360/Cyclone, to access and manipulate data and to generate engineering drawings and/or GIS databases.
  • Experience entering, editing and configuring data for ESRI GIS Desktop and ArcGIS online webmap software.
  • Experience reviewing field survey raw data for errors and making appropriate corrections.
  • Experience preparing deed mosaics in AutoDesk Civil 3D.
  • Experience preparing topographic base maps using AutoDesk Cvil 3D.
  • Experience preparing record Right-of-Way and Easement plats.
