Non-exempt; part-time / year-round position; approximately 3-12 hours per week; assigned hours will be weekday evenings during 6-to-8-week program sessions; no-benefits

This position is responsible for the instruction of Archery sport skill and techniques classes with participant ages youth (age 9+) through adult. Skills and techniques will vary, beginner though intermediate. Class sessions are located at Utica Park, Scott Key Recreation Center, and Cunningham Falls State Park. Location, schedule, and duration of each class/program will be determined as appropriate. Necessary equipment will be provided by the Division of Parks and Recreation. Supervision is received from the Archery Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, coordinate and execute lesson plans and course outlines
  • Assure the return and condition of issued equipment and supplies
  • Compile and maintain record-keeping related to each class (e.g. attendance)
  • Teach and demonstrate sports skills and techniques
  • Communicate effectively with age appropriate language
  • Perform other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

The qualifications/requirements, knowledge/skills/abilities and physical requirements or working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Minimum age 18 years by March 1, 2024
  • Current certification in Community First Aid and CPR, or the ability to become certified before the program begins
  • Current Certification as a USA Level 1 Archery Instructor or the ability to become certified through the Archery Coordinator of Frederick County Parks and Recreation

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Ability to effectively prepare and carry out lesson plans (as appropriate)
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working/teaching relationships with co-workers, participants, and their family members; school personnel and the general public
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills in order to conduct classes and perform related record-keeping
  • Ability to effectively lead and supervise large groups in recreational activities
PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
  • Experience providing sports instruction in a leadership role to elementary youth
  • Sports coaching certification(s) or licenses
  • Current USA Archery Level 1 certification
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to consistently walk, move, traverse, and performing repetitive motions.
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to consistently work outdoors and walk on uneven ground.

  • Required certifications must be maintained during tenure of employment

Position is not eligible to receive benefits with exception to the 457 Plan as listed below.

Savings Plan - Deferred Compensation:
The County offers a Section 457 Plan. Deferred compensation plans allow participants to save for retirement now and pay taxes later by contributing a portion of their salaries pre-tax to the plan. Contributions are invested at the employee's direction into one or more of the variety of investment options offered by the plan. Changes may be made to the contribution levels, investment options, etc. at any time.
