ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of General Services , the Division of Facilities Management (DFM) delivers operational and mission critical services 24 hours a day seven days a week on behalf of County residents and Montgomery County Government. DFM manages over 400 County buildings, ensuring they are maintained at the highest level to provide a comfortable environment for employees and the public.

ABOUT THE JOB

Public Service Craftworkers (PSCW) perform general skilled carpentry work and repairs in the construction, alteration, and maintenance of buildings.Areas include but are not limited to floors (floor material types include but are not limited to wood, tile, ceramic, carpet, etc.), roofs, roof drains and gutters, partitions, doors, windows, screens, fences, wood fixtures and furniture.The employee regularly conducts facility inspections, correcting minor electrical, mechanical, or structural problems on a wide range of building types.This employee investigates reported facility maintenance problems and resolves them independently and/or recommends more comprehensive action.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

Daily work duties also include but are not limited to:
  • ordering materials
  • preparing daily written reports
  • closing out completed service tickets
  • referring service tickets for additional services
  • scheduling work
  • leading less skilled employees in the performance of work when necessary
  • participating in snow/ice control measures during inclement weather, which occasionally requires unscheduled overtime

As part of routine general maintenance for buildings, the employee installs/makes adjustments and repairs to locks doors, hinges, and other hardware.

WHAT YOU BRING
  • Ability to frequently lift items weighing up to 50 lbs., and occasionally lift objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to rig and handle all materials necessary to accomplish an assignment.
  • Work overhead or in stretched, cramped, awkward, tiring, and uncomfortable positions.
  • Distinguish between color-coded objects, such as electrical wiring, epoxy-coated steel, and green board.
  • Perform work from scaffolding, ladders, and platforms, and to work in adverse weather and temperatures outdoors and indoors.
  • Wear and use personal protective clothing and equipment when exposed to dust, fumes, and other irritants to the eyes, nose, ears, and respiratory system.

Additional Employment Information

SOME WORK IS CARRIED OUT AFTER NORMAL WORKING HOURS AND ON WEEKENDS. EMPLOYEE MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK ALL HOURS.

The Division of Facilities Management is a 24/7/operation and as such, PSCW's are subject to work a mandatory stand-by rotation schedule.

Work that is performed at maintenance-construction work sites requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE); situational awareness and caution are always required at project sites.

The individual selected for this position will be considered an Essential Employee and overtime work will be required. Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave.

This position REQUIRES the possession of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license.

To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state and County laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience : Four (4) years of experience performing building maintenance tasks, building/structural maintenance tasks, repair and alteration involving the application of any building maintenance trades (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, etc.).

Education : Completion of high school or possession of a High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland

Equivalency : None.

License :Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence appropriate to the type(s) of equipment being operated.

Preferred Criteria

There are no Preferred Criteria Assessments.All applicants will be reviewed by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated "Qualified," placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for interview.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:
  1. Experience troubleshooting and repairing a variety of light plumbing problems including replacing fixtures and equipment.
  2. Experience troubleshooting and repairing light electrical problems such as replacing lamps fixtures and equipment.
  3. Experience troubleshooting and performing minor repairs of HVAC problems such as replacing filters, lubricating parts.
  4. Experience using computers including but not limited to navigating the internet, managing emails, accessing work tickets.
