Position Overview

The Teacher, Physical Education Aquatics is responsible for five primary roles: (1) creating a safe and inclusive learning environment in the swimming pool; (2) teaching water safety, swimming, and aquatics-based courses; (3) planning and delivering lessons to students enrolled in aquatics courses; (4) evaluating students; and (5) attending all meetings, professional development, and collaborative blocks, and adhering to core professional expectations. This position is a safety-sensitive position. As a result, throughout employment this position will be subject to the Employee Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy.

The Teacher, Physical Education Aquatics will report to the Principal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Provides direct instruction to classes of 15 or less students in the swimming pool, ensuring that appropriate safety measures are in place (e.g., that pool manager and lifeguard are on duty).
  • Assists in the enforcement of all federal, state, and district regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Identifies supplies and equipment as needed to implement and carry out an aquatics and physical education program; and maintains an ongoing inventory of these materials.
  • Implements the aquatics physical education program using instructional techniques to improve students' performance in water safety, life saving techniques, basic aquatic skills, stroke mechanics, diving, starts and turns, and other aquatics-based activities (e.g., water aerobics, water polo, lifetime fitness, and water therapy).
  • Administers formative and summative assessments; and creates comprehensive grading in line with American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Standards and Health and Physical Education Standards.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education (or has coursework equivalent, as determined by OSSE, or is currently enrolled in a program to obtain a Master's degree in Health and Physical Education).
  • Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
  • Licensed by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education in Health and Physical Education.
  • In the absence of holding a valid teaching credential, successful completion of the Praxis 1 and 2 exams, or has held a standard teaching license with another state for three or more successful years with which there is reciprocity in obtaining a valid teaching credential.
