TOOLING MANAGER

Job description

Overview Manage and supervise the overall activities of the tooling department for plastics injection molds and tools. Coordinate activities and communication between Tooling Department and other Departments with management as needed. Oversee daily department employee's activities, maintenance of molds and related equipment to ensure good working order. Responsibilities Accountable for the safety of the team through active engagement in safety activities and provides clear, consistent communication of safe work expectations. Responsible for budgeting and managing expenses for the Tooling Department. Evaluate capital needs for the Tooling Department. Determine budget needed and handle capital requests. Oversee tool shop operations, including tool maintenance, repairs, and engineering changes. Completes incident investigations, root cause analysis and implements corrective actions accordingly in a timely and thorough manner. Ensures proper technical training and development of tool shop Technicians. Actively participates and promotes continuous improvement activities to reduce Downtime (SMEDs and Kaizen Events) Work closely with Production Planners to align toolroom activities with overall production goals. Maintains and ensures organization of tooling parts inventory. Ensure the timely and budget-conscious completion of tooling activities. Assess the feasibility of jobs in the toolroom and make decisions regarding outsourcing when necessary. Provide technical support in collaboration with engineering staff for design reviews, repairs, and engineering changes. Schedules daily mold setting, Mold PMs, cleaning and mold cavity repair activities. Report key performance indicators (KPIs) to management and participate in Planning Kick-Off and Close-Out meetings. Develops and Conducts Employee Performance evaluations and administers employee coaching/counseling in a timely manner. Implement and maintain quality control procedures to comply with industry standards and regulations. Responsible for toolroom employee performance, training and timekeeping. Effective written and oral communication skills Must be mechanically and electrically inclined. Must be safety and quality conscience at all times. 5-7 years mold toolroom supervisor experience Ability to work under limited supervision Additional training may be required to retain position Must be familiar with the operation of PLCs, Drives, and robots. Must be responsible, self- motivated and team oriented. Must be able to make decisions with minimal supervision. Must have a willingness to take a 'hands on' approach during times of process interruption. Education and/or Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in a managerial role in a Tool Room or equivalent setting. Journeyman mold maker or equivalent experience is highly preferred. CAD experience, especially in Master-Cam or Solid Works, is preferred. Familiarity with FDA compliance regulations is a plus. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers and decimals. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables.
