As part of the Technology Solutions Team, the Data Analyst manages NAFSA s data services, and implements, maintains, and conducts comprehensive data analytics to assist decision-makers in advancing the organization s work. This position is responsible for querying and report writing in NAFSA s Association Management System (iMIS) and other databases, and for providing dashboards, reports and other analyzed data to departments across the association. The successful incumbent will be excited about what can be learned with data and how data can be applied to solving problems. This position is responsible for teaching others the best way to leverage data to enhance desired outcomes. The analyst uses a variety of programs, including databases, spreadsheets, business intelligence software, mapping tools, statistical software, and advanced analytics to track performance, predict trends, and interpret data.

Reporting & Data Analytics (60%):

Manage and support NAFSA s analytics and business intelligence (BI) platform (Acumen).

Develop dashboards and visualizations that will serve to:

Inform the organization about progress towards strategic priorities set by leadership;

Standardize models for data visualizations (i.e. conference demographic data and survey reporting); and

Help stimulate thinking and excitement around the role of analytics in helping to solve real business needs.

Work with cross-departmental teams to define metrics, guidelines, and strategies for effective use of data and trends consistent with the association s goals.

Work with staff on supporting their business and program functions to translate data into trends and actionable business intelligence through in-depth analyses and visualizations that serve their end-users and measure success.

Support the Senior Director in capturing, measuring, demonstrating, and updating organization-wide KPIs.

Create queries and reports from NAFSA s enterprise system data sets including, but not limited to, marketing, sales, and engagement data to support business objectives.

Regularly monitor data integrity for consistency with the organization s business rules, and preventing data quality issues by identifying frequent user errors, system and legacy issues; identify causes of poor data quality, recommend and implement solutions, and communicate findings to staff and management.

Work with database administrators and data owners across all data sources to correct data that is inconsistent with NAFSA business rules, and ensure data integrity in support of analytics and reporting.

Field incoming data support tickets from end users to resolve data issues and support reporting needs.

Assist in translating and documenting procedures for data integration and infrastructure together with the Technology Solutions team, including:

New/updated processes for querying and selecting information from databases/warehouse;

How to integrate information from multiple sources (AMS, web analytic tools, financial software, and other key databases); and

Standardization processes for extracting/blending data from data warehouse into visualization and analytics software like Tableau, PowerBI, Python, R, etc.

Training & Communication (20%):

Train colleagues on the use of enterprise data analytics and visualization tools that help develop data literacy, enhance data ownership, and encourage analytics self-service prescribed using analytics tools and data-guided thinking.

Proactively train & support business owners of enterprise data sets in data maintenance according to NAFSA business rules; develop & maintain current end-user training materials & business process documentation for data governance.

Prepare and deliver reports, recommendations, or alternatives for improving processes in reporting systems across the organization.

Communicate reporting changes, enhancements, and modifications verbally and through written documentation to management and other stakeholders so that issues and solutions are understood.

Document and catalog learning resources for future deployment in staff capacity-development, including resources such as online learning courses, workshops, blogs/articles, apps, etc.)

Research, document, and catalog available resources for capacity building related to data literacy, analysis, and adoption. Maintain a repository for information and processes related to data warehouse implementation, processes, integration/blending, and ETL (extraction-translation-loading).

Support adherence to GDPR & other compliance requirements across NAFSA s data systems.

Advise on data structure within the Association Management System for new and revised system integrations.

Strategy & Planning (10%):

Support NAFSA Business/Program functions with getting the intelligence they need to best serve their end users and measure success.

Chart the existing and future-state data analytics environment (data sources, activities and processes) and keep documentation current for knowledge-transfer across the organization.

Develop and implement policies and practices for working with internal stakeholder groups in collecting, analyzing, and operationalizing their data.

Develop routines and procedures for end-users to facilitate best practices use of reporting and business intelligence tools and applications.

Develop data management policies and procedures with the technology team & data owners.

Work with cross-departmental teams to define metrics, guidelines, and strategies for effective use of data and trends consistent with the association s goals.

Research, review, and analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of existing report procedures and develop strategies for enhancing or further leveraging these processes, and incorporating into the data warehouse, where appropriate.

Participate in the identification, evaluation, recommendation of new data systems and data analytics tools that support the organization s analytics goals and improve customer interaction with NAFSA s website.

Staff and Vendor Management (5%):

Help lead and guide NAFSA cross-departmental teams in the implementation of analytics platforms and services.

Motivate, support, assess and evaluate direct reports in the production of timely, high quality technology support and service.

Partner closely with numerous external vendors providing technology and analytics infrastructure support; ensure contracts and service level agreements are fulfilled; lead contract review & renewal process for systems identified in annual workplan.

Consult with supervisor on the strategies, problem-solving and accomplishments of the team.

Other projects and duties, as assigned (5%).

Total Compensation, Benefits

The target salary for this full-time, 35-hour per week Data Analyst position is $70,000 . Total compensation for employment at NAFSA entails a competitive employee benefits package including:

Requirements

Required Qualifications

Bachelor s degree in the field of computer science, mathematics, information management, data analytics, statistics and/or equivalent experience. Master s degree in data analytics preferred.

Minimum three (3) years of professional experience in the technology and/or data science field, with at least two (2) of those years as proven work experience in a data analyst role, working autonomously with advanced analytics software; including direct experience programming for data analysis and management; ideally, Python, SQL, and/or R.

Minimum of two (2) years of direct experience working with data visualization software (Power BI preferred).

Comfort writing formulas and manipulating spreadsheets to analyze large datasets.

An approach for how to spot when data looks wrong, and how to figure out why.

Demonstrated experience working within project-based work structures, and/or developing or leading programs or projects.

Excellent working knowledge of SQL (sequential query language).

Strong working knowledge of relational database management systems (RDBMS), reporting tools, Excel, and data visualization tools.

Demonstrated experience applying scientific approaches to analyze qualitative and quantitative data to ensure rigor in data quality.

Experience with the collection, manipulation, and visualization of large, varied data sets.

Experience working with data sets pertaining to sales, product/event trends, web analytics and marketing.

Experience working with cross-departmental teams to define metrics, guidelines, and strategies for effective maintenance and use of data.

Demonstrated capabilities in communicating data insights to people beyond the data science team, knowing how to best craft effective messaging and selecting the right visualizations to support decision-making.

Work Environment

Employees are eligible to request a regular teleworking arrangement for Mondays and/or Fridays. The workday is generally 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The week after Memorial Day to Labor Day, it is 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday.

Travel is required occasionally related to job responsibilities, especially for the annual conference or other leadership meetings. Participation in the NAFSA annual conference the week of Memorial Day, including the holiday itself, is a job requirement. The annual conference is held in varying cities.

Tasks are performed in a typical office environment, involving sitting for extended periods of time. Sitting, standing, bending, and lifting 10lbs or less will occur intermittently throughout the workday. Position involves constant use of computer keyboard and monitor, with intermittent use of headset and microphone
