Job description

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Academic Success Coach assists pharmacy students with progression and academic success during the professional pharmacy academic years.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:

None

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Internal contacts include assistant/associate deans, directors, department heads/chairs, faculty, staff and students at the College and school levels, and deans, directors, and executive level officers at university. External contacts include governmental agencies, other health profession schools, health professionals, students, parents, and the general public.

PRINCIPAL

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Use student academic record from Canvas to monitor student academic progress and early intervention(s).
  • Work with students to help set personal academic goals, and to develop academic success plan.
  • Communicate with students, Progression Committee, Academic Dean to foster students' academic success, and ensure a coordinated approach.
  • Monitor the attendance of students with academic deficiency to the College tutorial program and pharmacy courses.
  • Assist with the student progression process and ensure that students are supported in the program.
  • Actively participate in Student Progression and Retention Committee (otherwise known as Progression Committee) meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Progression Committee Chair prior to student appeal hearing with the Progression Committee to ensure accurate accounts of student progression efforts.
  • Provide evidence-based reports on student academic progression efforts (e.g., attending scheduled meetings, attending tutoring sessions, etc.) during the student appeal hearing with the Progression Committee.
  • Advance student retention and on-time graduation in collaboration with the Progression Committee and Academic Dean.
  • Mentor and coach students on acclimation to pharmacy school, personal, family, academic, and work difficulties. Partner with students to address barriers to meeting their academic and career goals.
  • Help students navigate Howard University and College of Pharmacy policies and procedures, and utilize a holistic advising model to guide, challenge, and support students.
  • Develop and implement student workshops to enhance student success.
  • Develop and implement retention best practices and innovative student engagement initiatives.
  • Assist the Director of Assessment in survey design, distribution, and data collection.
  • Complete evaluation and assessment reports on student advising and progression.
  • Stay abreast on current information on student retention and academic progression strategies.
  • Meet or exceed academic, assessment, and progression performance metrics each academic year.
  • Assist with proctoring examinations as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Demonstrated experience in counseling students in the higher education setting and advising students on academic requirements.
  • Competence in both oral and written English.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, with a diverse group of constituents.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with students, faculty, staff, university officials, and the general public.


MINIMUM

REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree in education or equivalent. Experience in higher education or academic working environment. Four or more years of experience working with student.Training in student success and retention.
