Associate Director, Computational Drug Development

Job description

Job Summary:

The preclinical DMPK & Pharmacology team at Supernus Pharmaceuticals is expanding its drug discovery platform and is hiring a computational drug discovery expert. The candidate will be empowered to manage, oversee, and execute various activities related to computational drug discovery while collaborating with a team of medicinal chemists, pharmacologists, neuroscientists, and translational DMPK scientists.

The ideal applicant should have substantial hands-on experience in Computer-Aided Drug Design including Molecular Docking, Molecular Dynamics, Big Data processing, Cheminformatics, and Artificial Intelligence in early drug discovery. General background and understanding of in vitro and in vivo pharmacology, quantitative structure-activity relationships, physics-based modeling, and simulation, and drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics pertaining to CNS drug development are highly desired. The position has substantial opportunities for career development and advancement.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

* Execute hands-on molecular docking to assist with early drug design.

* Conduct and interpret molecular dynamics simulation and virtual screening of molecular libraries.

* Utilize artificial intelligence techniques to expedite drug discovery efforts.

* Apply in-depth knowledge of structure-activity relationships, a profound understanding of target biology, and predictive methods for assessing synthetic feasibility, physicochemical properties, and metabolism for drug design.

* Coordinate with consultants and CROs to design studies, estimate budget, and manage experiments.

* Execute various computational drug discovery projects simultaneously while keeping track of the data sets generated within an organized platform.

* Conduct literature searches and propose new ideas for developing innovative small molecules to address unmet medical needs.

* Remain updated on the technological advances and recommend novel approaches to optimize the process of in silico drug design.

* Inform management on progress regularly including oral presentations and written reports.

* Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

* Mentors' department junior level staff, no direct reports.

* Provides leadership in an effective manner consistent with Company Values towards defined Corporate Objectives.

Knowledge & Other Qualifications:

* Ph.D. in Structural Biology, Biological Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medicinal Chemistry or related field and a minimum of 5 years of industry experience, or a master's degree and a minimum 7 years of industry experience.

* Hands-on experience in computational drug discovery techniques, such as Computer-Aided Drug Design including Molecular Docking, Molecular Dynamics, Big Data processing, Cheminformatics, and Artificial Intelligence in early drug discovery.

* A deep understanding of the overall drug discovery process in the pharmaceutical industry is highly desirable.

* General background and understanding of in vitro and in vivo pharmacology, quantitative structure-activity relationships, physics-based modeling, and simulation, and drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics pertaining to CNS drug development are desirable.

* Experience in drug development with a focus on CNS drug discovery is preferred but not required.

* Experience in positions of management is preferred.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment/Travel Requirements:

* Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or carrying objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.

* The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer screen, iPad, or other electronic device; and extensive reading.

* The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
