Overview:
The Associate Dean of Nursing oversees day to day operations in school of nursing; faculty support and facilities management and planning; manages curriculum and reviews course reports each term for trends, identifies potential learning gaps and makes adjustments in real time. She fortifies SU SON visibility, collaboration and relationships with community partners to provide enhanced clinical learning opportunities and experiences for students; she monitor student success, including student retention, graduation rates and NCLEX pass rates.
The incumbent candidate must have experience in academic, clinical or administrative nursing, or any combination thereof. He/she must have strong understanding of nursing education and excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. He/she must be able to assist departments in implementing and supporting individual faculty and staff development plans, especially for individuals who must retain licensure or other regulatory credentials.


Functions:
Essential Job Functions:
  • Assesses effectiveness of nursing student admissions process and provides recommendations for improvement to the Dean, as needed.
  • Provides oversight of faculty development training every term; implements and supports individual faculty and assists with staff development plans.
  • Assesses clinical facility placement needs and evaluates the quality of clinical facilities in accordance with Board of Nursing to ensure that clinical learning experiences are able to satisfy course and program objectives;
  • Coordinates clinical placements within the community and with other neighboring communities clinical coordinating agents.
  • Implements and assesses plans for improving clinical agency relations through the use of effective communications and regular site visits to affiliate agencies.
  • Establishes and fortifies SU SON visibility, collaboration and relationships with community partners to provide enhanced clinical learning opportunities and experiences for students.
  • Assists the Dean with implementation of the nursing programs budgets and helps identify equipment needs.
  • Organizes and participates in meetings of the Nursing Program Advisory Committee;
  • Serves as SU's liaison with the Board of Nursing regarding continuing education for faculty/nurses;
  • Fosters a departmental climate that supports collegiality and professional development of students, faculty and staff; coordinates faculty grievances and appeals processes in conjunction with other departments handling faculty affairs.

Qualifications:
Required Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree in nursing required, Doctorate degree in nursing or credit towards Doctorate degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, direct and mentor faculty.
  • Knowledge and experience including but not limited to: an understanding of the educational experiences of student nurses, an ability to use the vocabulary of nursing and an understanding of the clinical practice of nursing
  • Experience in authoring accreditation reports including self studies in Nursing.
  • Unencumbered license as a RN (18VAC90-27-40 and 18VAC90-27-60)
  • Five or more years of progressive experience in collaborative management and leadership in higher education administration.
  • Five or more years of experience as a registered nurse, nurse practitioner or as an administrator of a medical office or hospital setting.
  • Three or more years of experience as an instructor and/or administrator in an academic setting.
  • Must be self-directed and innovative, able to assess current operations in an effort to improve the future goals of the University.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Must work well with employees at all levels of the University, in addition to students and other customers.
  • Must be able to hand situations with tact, persuasiveness and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
