Job description

Overview Berry Global in Winchester, VA is looking to add a Packaging Engineer to our team. This position plans and directs activities concerned with design and development of protective packaging containers: Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special-handling and safety requirements, and type of materials required for container. Responsibilities Consults with establishment's purchasing and production departments to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging. Develops or directs development of sketches, specifications, samples, and written analyses of proposed packaging in order to present design for approval. May confer with customers or sales representatives to draw up contracts. May advise employer or customers on efficient packing procedures, innovations in packaging materials, and utilization of sealing and fastening devices. Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing. Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions. Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging. Assist in designing/fabrication for production needs such as tooling, punches, and die packs Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews. Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Work closely with global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, and sourcing. Participate in product introduction teams, to deliver new products to market. Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage. Optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, and compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements. Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs. Work with manufacturing departments to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability. Develop and implement comprehensive test plans to ensure that packaging exceeds customer specifications Assist in the prevention of nonconforming product from being shipped to customers. Packaging support to Sales, Customer Service and customers. Responsible for maintaining and adhering to established Good Manufacturing Procedures (GMP) and Safety Quality Foods (SQF) compliance requirements. Assisting in projects related to automation in each production department. Communicate with Berry M&H UK on projects as needed. Qualifications Engineering degree preferred from an accredited academic institution or equivalent experience. Possess functional knowledge of machinery, tools and fabrication methods preferred. JDE/PMIS experience preferred, not required. Proficient with computer-assisted design (CAD) software. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Passion for problem solving, critical thinking, and continuous improvement. Ability to communicate complex information in a digestible format across various modes (email, phone, video conferencing) and levels of the organization (front line, hourly production team as well as executive leadership) Organized and detail-oriented Understanding of process improvement, quality improvement concepts is needed; ISO 9001 certification (e.g., CQA, CQE, CQIA) is desirable. Should have experience in rapid prototyping. Ability to communicate orally with customers, management, and coworkers is crucial. Regular use of the telephone and e-mail for communication is essential. Sitting for extended periods is common. Hearing and vision within normal ranges is helpful for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents. No heavy lifting is expected. Exertion of up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally may be required. Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, copiers, and FAX machines.
