Director of Business Development

Job description

The Director of Business Development plays a critical role in helping Lifelong achieve its ambitious revenue generating goals by securing foundation, corporate, and governmental funding. The person who fills this role will rebuild and own the Business Development function for the Agency. Business Development will initially be a staff of one, with supervisory responsibilities as the function grows.

The position researches and identifies funder prospects and funding opportunities, cultivates, and deepens relationships with current funders, writes and edits compelling proposals and reports that convey the goals and mission of Lifelong, and manages all application deadlines and communications relating to funding proposals and grant applications. The Director of Business Development reports to the CFO and works closely with staff across the organization to collect data for grant-funded programs and to understand current funding trends and priorities within the organization.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Prepares, manages, and submits grant proposals to foundation, corporate, and government sources, in collaboration with the CEO, CFO, and program teams. Functions include proposal writing, budget preparation, application assembly, and facilitation of required reviews and edits to ensure on-time application submission.
  • Performs prospect research on potential funders and funding opportunities to assess eligibility and competitiveness; collaborates with program teams to ensure alignment with departmental and organizational goals and strategies.
  • Meet monthly with programmatic leadership to:
    • Discuss upcoming application submissions in preparation for bi-monthly meetings with CEO and CFO;
    • Review potential strategic opportunities identified by program teams and Director of Business Development;
    • Develop plans to cultivate relationships with potential and existing funding partners.
  • Lead monthly Grant Oversight meetings with CEO, CFO, and program teams; present funding levels versus target, submitted and pending proposal details, potential future funding gaps, and other key metrics as requested.
  • Actively monitor funding status of submitted applications.
  • Work with the Executive Team and Leadership Team to gather information necessary to report to funders on current programs, when needed.
  • Maintain list of active contracts and key contract information for use by the Executive Team and Leadership Team.
  • Use of Salesforce for maintaining and tracking records, and for reporting purposes, as requested.
  • Ensure confidentiality of proposal application data and contracts.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience:

Core Competencies:

  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of Lifelong s history and programs.
  • Strong written communication skills and proven ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals.
  • Demonstrated well-developed editing skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to set timelines, meet deadlines, and ensure others meet their deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience with proposal writing.
  • Proven knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for grant prospect research.
  • Strong contributor in team environments and collaborator in cross-functional settings.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a related discipline. Master s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience with grant writing (foundations, corporate, and government grants).
  • Experience with nonprofit revenue generation.
  • Experience working in deadline-driven, team environments, handling multiple assignments and monitoring and meeting fundraising income goals.
  • Experience with Salesforce preferred.
  • Full-time. Can be remote or hybrid position.
  • All staff are currently required to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination prior to hiring. The use of personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to COVID-19 may be required in the future should exposure warrant it.

Salary range: $95,000.00 - $125,000.00 /year
