To learn more about Berry, visit This engineer/scientist drives new product development for the division focusing on innovation. Through the appointment of this position, Berry seeks to significantly elevate product innovation and development and align its product offerings to respond to changing market dynamics. Responsibilities include solution development, feasibility assessment, prototype development and assessment, manufacturing scale up, and meeting product commercialization dates. Will work closely with other development scientist, product managers, commercial organization, operations and the management team to deliver innovative new products. Responsibilities Design and development of films from concept creation to launch using existing or new assets. Extensive interaction with technical and project personnel both internal to Berry and external vendors to understand performance requirements and equipment capabilities for new product proposals. Must define those requirements using key physical properties, visual standards, and performance characteristics. Broad use of polymer science and engineering principles to solve product and production challenges and invent new products/processes. Ability to connect technologies and concepts to business potential Design and conduct experiments to validate product performance Interact with manufacturing personnel to optimize product design for ease of manufacturing Office/Meetings and Lab/Pilot-Plant/Production time allocation expected to be around 50:50 Ability to identify patent opportunities, prepare legal literature, and work with the Legal group to prepare applications Prepare and submit BOMs, technical documents and descriptions to the commercial team to be utilized for product recommendations and to generate costing/price models. Key is to help the organization understand the value of the innovation Follow the ISO Stage Gate system for project management and tracking. Other responsibilities as assigned Qualifications Requires a solid understanding of resins used in flexible films packaging and the extrusion equipment used to create these film products. Requires supplier interaction to stay current with new and existing equipment, polymer systems, market films, processing and converting equipment, physical property testing techniques, and packaging equipment. Ability to manage multiple projects, including planning, time lines, weekly communication, and key project updates. Comfortable with managing changing priorities Excellent analytical skills Strong planning/organizing skills Ability to effectively communicate/present findings to a wide variety of audiences Knowledge and use of Six Sigma tools for analyzing data Self-starter and ability to work independently as needed Ability to solve practical problems and deal with limited information and drive to quick success. Hands-on experience with continuous web based manufacturing a plus S. / M.S. Degree in Chemical, Mechanical or Polymer Science/Engineering Minimum of 5 years' experience in product development, process engineering or related areas Experience working with coex cast/blown film equipment and product development activities.
